Do you HAVE to use screen?

Im wondering for a veiled chameleon, is it really necessary to succumb it to a mesh cage? Im thinking a ficus tree, with a large plant tray to catch the droppings, no mesh cage, and for the crickets cup feed?

Well, you can free range, but they will climb down and most likely go somewhere that you cannot find them. What is pinning crickets to a leaf???

LOL, please don't pin them to a leaf! Train your chameleon to cup feed. Place a cup in the tree thats deep enough that crickets can't jump out. Cut a hole in the bottom of the plastic cup and replace it with a mesh screen for drainage, so your crickets or worms don't drown.
If you are going to free range your cham, make sure you always close your door to the room so he doesn't escape.
For humidity, I recommend you use a humidifier for your room.
