Docile sleep

Hey, so I have noticed about my chameleon an odd thing he does an it perplexed me to why he does it.
He likes to nap on a self made bamboo cane that over hangs my shelving that I made for him.
When it's time for bed, an I'm ready to settle in bed I pick him up an return him to his Viv. When I pick him up he tends to close hi eyes an pretend to be asleep I gently scoop him onto my hand an put him
In Viv putting each foot on his branch in Viv myself one by one gently an rest his chin on the branch, to with he doesn't open his eyes at all.
When I finish an lock his Viv n walk away he opens his eyes, then when I look at him he closes them again
Is he pretending or what?
It's like a child that doesn't want to go bed an pretends to already be asleep!
What is this?

You say he is napping? Is this during daytime hours, or right before he is going to go to sleep? Sometimes chameleons will close their eyes when they are scared or stressed out.

Update sleep

Usually around 11pm
As that's when I go sleep
He doesn't seem stressed more relaxed
If anything. When he sleeps he turns orange
An coils his tail up, then when it's time to go in Viv
He pretends to sleep.
He's quiet happy with me scooping him up
As he opens his eyes an then shuts them again
