Drainage for Simba's Wood and Glass enclosure

A few people have asked me to post how I did the drainage for Simba's enclosure, so thought I would create a thread just on that (as it's sort of half way through the original build post)

Hope it helps those of you who need it! (Feel free to ask any questions you may have) :)

Cut the perspex to make the drainage system:

Had to go with different sections/shapes than originally planned because of the size of the piece of perspex I had.

Then put and inch square length of wood in the bottom along the front to raise the panel up and create a slope:

Put a 2" wooden block at the back corners to create the slopes from there too:

Seems to fit as it should!

This is the drainage fitting I chose to use:

Take plastic off perspex and glue down onto wooden blocks and baton and put plastic plug fitting into drainage hole:

Had to put another piece of perspex at the back to allow for the depth of the plug 'lip'

Then line the whole lot with pond liner:

Got some gorgeous foliage decor paper to line the sides and back so all waterproof (Make sure this overlaps the pond liner at the bottom so any run off ends up on the floor, not down the back of the liner)

Then popped the plughole onto the fitting (all sealed with pond sealer underneath) to complete the drainage system:

Very nice and I about crapped my pants when I saw the full enclosure pic! I thought that you had decorated the cage out and realized it was the lining! :D Fantastic enclosure and great drainage tutorial... :)

Hahahaha!!! Looks can be deceiving!!! The only plant in there is a big Ficus ;)

Thanks hun. I'm really pleased with how it looks. Simba seems to be really happy in there too. Forever exploring and eating and drinking great :D

Post pics of ur enclosure if ur on building :)

Hi kat,

That Viv looks amazing, great idea on the drainage. That is the same Viv bills enclosure started as its great to see something different done with one.

No not yet, hopefully it will be here in the next few days. Probably a good job with the people I hav had to deal with today I think all six bottles would be lying empty on the floor by now!

Great timing!

Well after a recent thread and lots of info, I have decided to add drainage to Zaphod's enclosure. This was perfect timing for this thread to appear . I had seen the original post a while back, but now I don't have to go looking :p. Great job, and I will be stealing some ideas!!! ;)

That looks really great! What will your water drain into?

DOH!! that would help wouldn't it??? (Please excuse my baby brain!! LOL)

Also drilled a hole into the cabinet the enclosure sits on:

Then attach the hose from the drainage fitting:

The water then drains down the hose into a drainage butt in the cabinet underneath ;)
