dropped my cham

today i was handling my cham, he was crawling on my back and all of a sudden i hear a bump. i look back and my cham is on the floor.

my cham fell from 4 ft high down on the hardwood floor. im worried about internal bleeding or something that could have happened from the fall.....did this happen to anyone???????

what shall i do....im worried hes gonna die...

First, chameleons are sort of designed to fall...like cats.

There are a gazillion facts people with knowledge will want to know. Here are a few questions that jumped to my mind:

How old is the chameleon?

Is he doing anything abnormal after the fall? (my male used to need a few moments to recover from a fall to the plastic cage floor...but after that he seemed okay)

What kind of chameleon is it?

Observe your cham. If he isn't displaying normal behaviour, bring him to a vet. Otherwise, don't worry about it.

A four foot drop on to hardwood floor is nothing to a healthy chameleon.

Of course it's rude ... and I said it because she is insulting me for no reason. She's coming out saying my English is bad .. but I don't see how. She needs to relax and stop being so defensive. I wasn't even talking to her LOL

Easy there with the word usage. 'Condemn' is a little harsh a word for something that wasn't intended to be taken seriously.

chill out guys.......no i did not notice anything different in the chams behavior.... after i took him back to his cage he ran straight to the basking spot to bask like nothing happened. i guess hes ok..


hes an ambilobe panther
about 7 months old
male.


the only problem with him is hes been off food for 3 days now.....doesnt want to eat anything all of a sudden not sure why.

I have an ambilobe around the same age .. and she falls a lot from climbing on the mesh at the top. After falling, she goes to her basking spot and chills for a bit too! Your little guy should be okay. Keep me updated

ChamNation, I'm sorry the nastiness was brought into your thread.

I agree that it seems your baby is going to be fine. You should probably keep the fall in mind for a few days because, at least in rodents, it sometimes takes a bit for the trauma of a fall to evidence itself.

wth .. lol .. what do rodents have to do with chameleons? I work with rodents every day and they get beat to sh*t by fellow rodents living within the same enclosure and get over it within a few minutes. You can't compare a cham to a rodent.

Chams are aboreal and falling is evident. In the wild, it's quite possible that they could fall a lot more than 4 feet. So, no worries. Like I said, if you see something odd, post back here and let us know!

Any busing? Any weird behavior other than not eating? Chameleons do a very cool thing when they are in mid air. They simply fill themselves with air and brace themselves before impact. Weird, Funny, I know but it is true. Im sure he is just fine.

Getting back on topic, your chameleon will most likely be fine. When Amy was small she leapt off of my hand and totally scared me. She landed splat on the carpet which has a concrete floor underneath. She was fine - I think it hurt me more than her! Made me very nervous handling her while she was still so tiny though! It's amazing how fast a small chameleon can move when it wants to!

Chameleons (especially babies) are designed to withstand a fall - an escape tactic from predators is to just fall off of the branch to avoid being lunch! They expand their ribs and inflate their lungs on impact to cushion the fall. As already suggested, if he's walking/moving around and behaving as as he normally does and is eating drinking and pooping then he will most likely have suffered no ill effects from his fall.

mine makes a bolt for the door (but in super-slow-mo with one eye on me all the time, its actually funny, as if he thinks he's successfully making a stealth jailbreak, lol) when I have it open to adjust things in the cage.

he seems happy walking around the top, so i just let him get out, but if I move too close he drops himself all the time, apparently common behavior for my type of cham. I was pretty alarmed by it too, so I'm careful about letting him out now.

thanks for all the help guy.....i think he might be shedding though because i noticed the past 3 days hes spending more and more time on the other side of the cage where its coldest.....and hes always dark colored.....this has been happening before the fall btw but it just came to me now..... maybe thats why hes not eating.....

Your chameleon will be fine, my pardalis fell when he was about 7 months and it was a ~4 foot fall, he threw up after from the trauma but was fine the next day. He will be fine.
