Dubia Colony potential ruined D:

well this afternoon i was going to give my chams a bit of a little treat since it is a bit warmer here today and i went to the "secret dubia colony" ;) where they are kept and i noticed that there we blueish yellow fungus growing on the egg cartons.. and thats usually where the dubias are at.. i keep oats at the bottom so they have a place to hide and thats where most of it was.. it seemed like there was steam coming from the oats and the catons and none of the dubias seem like there was anything wrong...:/ should i be worrying or should i kill off the colony and get a new one? HELP! i also have supers, and crickets but never had the greenish mold with yellow...

the mold will kill your colony

I dont recommend you gving your colony substrate
because mold/bacteria will grow there too

get new egg cartons and get rid of the oats right away
 
Your mold is probably an Aspergillus or Penicillium species. These are fairly common in food, and can be particular problems in grain (like oats). They're ubiquitous, s spores could have come in from the air and germinated in your oats, or they could have been present with the oats to begin with.
If you really want to be on the safe side, get new roaches. Several of these fungi can produce toxins in foodstuffs, such as aflatoxin and ochratoxin. I don't know if 1) your particular mold is toxic; 2) if so, if growth conditins favor toxin production; 3) if the roaches are ingesting the toxin in any quantity; 4) if it would pass on to your animals; or 5) how mycotoxins are metabolized in insects and reptiles, but the safest thing would be to start over.
Try not to stir up or shake the moldy materials too much, as these can produce a LOT of spores, which can be a respiratory irritant if they become airborne.

ok i got rid of the oats and tossed the junk out. i put the rest of the dubias into a small rubermaid containor with a lid on it so scrub out the tank quick. :) I will be figuring out how to kill them off so no infestation of my trash can or house :)

I really dont know if burning them will work
but I wouldnt try it either

how would you plan on burning them??

I am not kidding. I have heard too often of people
putting live animals in a microwave and having the animal explode.
It is because the moisture cannot leave the skin so it explodes like pop-corn

mk i won't burn them bcus i can't really harm animals its not my nature.. and my dumb old friends said that they put poor defensless cats in microwaves and they exploded! D: and i would light a candle and just put the heads in it so they would die.. mean but its possibly my only option with exterminating them unless i used raid?

yeah I know people who put cats in microwaves too:mad::(:mad::(.......
we had an incident a while back when a mother put her baby in a microwave
to dry her baby after a bath:mad::mad::mad:

hmmm..... burning their heads is not going to kill them right away
and it is going to take a long time if you do it one by one

why don't you just not feed them to your pets for a while and
try to clean the body system of the mold spores by cleaning their gut.
just a suggestion, I dont know too much about mold

SYN do you hate dubia as much as you hate crickets??
you seem a little excited there

oh wow! HORRIBLE PARENTING!!! :mad::mad::mad:
and i will try and clean out their guts :) thanks and i was thinking the same there about Syn! :) lol
 
I would quarantine them for a while, feed them good & see what happens. Would be ashame to enact roach genocide if you don't have too... Those little buggars aren't cheap & I know I'm proud to finally have mine breeding. :D

If their egg crates continue to grow mold, they don't do well because they're "infected" or whatever & you have to kill them, I recommend pouring a bunch of rubbing alcohol in a container with them. That should take care of them.

Next time, don't use any substrate/bedding, they will make their own frass out of poop! :D Good luck!

yeah I bought my colony for 20 bucks from who i got my Veiled they ripped me off bigtime! there was waay less than what they charged me for! D: but i will do so with with rubbing alcohol! we have tons at my house! thank god my moms a cosmotolitan :) or w.e. they are :p
