Dubia Roache Steup

I just was wondering how you guys kept your dubia roaches. Maby could I get some pics? So you guys know I have been using the search, I know this is one of the first things I normally get told. Anyone have any tips for keeping them?

My setup

I keep mine pretty simple. A 36 liter rubbermaid tub with Egg cartons and paper towel tubes on one end with a heat mat under them. and the dry food and water crystals on the other end. every other day or when I have food to throw out I stick it in there. Its that simple. I have a colony of 500+ and they are multiplying very rapidly.

Use the biggest rubbermade container that is convenient for you. I use a 39 gal. I think.

Try to keep half of the container on a heating pad. In that half put egg crates or ?????? to give them something to hide, sleep, and breed in. My basement is extremely cool so I cut a hole in the lid of the rubbermade container and threaded an aluminum light reflector and fixture into it. I use an infrared bulb in this fixture shining directly down on the egg crates. With this setup I can keep that side between 90-95 degrees.

I leave the other side of the container bare. On this side I feed with fruits, veggies, and a small amount of dried cat food. I also have a sponge that I wet down whenever I need to add more food. This keeps the humidity up.

I use a cheap digital humidity and temp gauge from Lowes to monitor conditions. Humidity should be around 30%.

For cleaning it's best to have another container that is the same as the first to make cleaning a breeze. I just keep one stacked inside of the other. When it's time to clean (once every month or two) I unstack them, take the egg crates out of the dirty container, one at a time, making sure to shake all of the droppings off of them. Some persistant roaches will hold on for dear life so I shake them off into the clean container and discard the old egg crates. I then shake all the droppings and sheds to one end of the dirty container, put a few clean egg crates in and let the remaining roaches run for cover in the new crates. After a couple of times of removing the crates and shaking them off into the clean container most of the roaches are switched over and the rest can be removed fairly easily.

I clean the dirty container with bleach water, dry it off and stack them up until next time.

Hope that helps.....if I left anything out just ask.

Good luck,
Kevin

OMG every time I read u guys post bout these roaches I freak out... I don't know if I'll ever be able to feed him roaches *gag*

So do you use crickets? I once saw a worm crawl out of a squished crickets but that was several times the length of the cricket. :D

Crickets smell disgusting!!!!!!!

I hate having to feed them. The roaches are almost effortless.....and definately odorless. :D

That's what I understand. I have some roaches on the way. It took some convincing for the wife but after I explained about no smell and they are quiet she was all for it. ;)

Look under the baby tubs and you will see 2 of my roach tubs, I coat them with bug stop and have heating pads under them... Easy as pie...

Well thank fully my mom said I could feed my lizards roaches (when I get my lizards). She even said I could Breed them!

I've done with and without substrate. No substrate is way easier to clean. Go wide on the container if you can instead of deep. I've seen "non-climbing" nymphs climb rubbermaid container walls, but I've never seen anything climb a sterilite container so that's what I use.

For my setup I put a sterilite container, inside a sterilite container and fill the gap inbetween with insulation. I drill a hole through both containers on a side wall, and patch at least two zoomed heating pads inside with the chords running outside. Then I glu-gun the space around the chords shut. Then the container can go outside and my wife never has to worry about them or look at them. They stay warm out there, even in the winter, and they get enough air circulation from opening the lid every third day or so to change water and food.

Works for me!

I havent tried roaches yet. I know the crickets are voracious eaters and will eat anything I put in with them. They do stink like hell. Do you roach guys use only roaches or both, will they eat what crix do? I think I am going to get some right now. My gf said I couldnt but when do I listen to her hahaha jk.

Uh..not sure, the foamy stuff that I'm also using on my basement remodel. I try to get stuff without fermaldihyde in it (the none yellow bales I think).

No need to put anything the bottom, it just would give them something to hide in and make it harder to clean... Just get yourself a nice sized tub and some egg flats.

I use both... The roach will eat just about anything. I have a lid full of whatever load I have then toss in grees of some sort from time to time... Or an apple I dont finish, or orange, or whatever really... Its a roach... Will eat just about anything.

Hahaha yeah thanks Chad. I figured they would eat just about anything being a roach and all. I ordered 25 dubia. Is this enough to start breeding them.

My roach setup is just like everyone elses.
Rubbermaid with eggcrates on one half and food on the other.
I do use a heat pad on the eggcrate side.
25 is going to take a long time to start.
If I were you try to see if your chams will eat them first.
It would be a big waste of time and effort if they didnt even eat roaches.
I order 150 small from blaberus.com for 38 dollars shipped.
