Im going to try breeding dubias and I read somewhere that using a coconut hair substrate helps and reduces any odors. Does anybody do this or should I not use the substrate?

Dont use anything dubias do not stink... if you use susbtrat the babies can get in there and hide

they really do not produce a odor. I would just leave the bottom of the bin empty. The problem with putting substrate in is when you have to clean. Then you also have the issue of the babies in the substrate if you are ever going to feed them. I clean my dubia bin once a month and have no smell from it at all.

Yes i wouldnt put any substrate either...it would be very difficult to clean out the mess later down the road and you wouldnt want to throw out any dubias hiding in the substrate either.

Howdy,

Here's one of my old posts showing how I used large egg crate pieces laying on the bottom with a 1-2" peak bowing effect to make a roach motel. The photo shows one piece lifted up to show the underside. I use heat tape on the underside of the 10gal aquarium and a dimmer to adjust the heat to about 90F. Seems to work . They do love their Cricket Crack :). The also get plenty of veggie leftovers. https://www.chameleonforums.com/need-dubia-help-35311/#post326173

No smell, no hopping away, cheaper than crickets, whats not to love. After buying 3000 crickets per month and the horrible stench it was easy to convince my husband this was the way to go. I dont use any substrate, just a bunch of the egg crates (30 eggs). Veggies, water crystals and let them be. I dont use any heat sources, just sit them in the sun room and they are happy.
