Egg laying ordeal is finally over!!!

All,

I just wanted to follow-up to my original post about my female veiled (Fergie) and our first egg laying experience. She successfully laid 61 infertile eggs a few days ago and appears to be doing great. I would like to thank Kinyonga for the immediate assistance and jannb and others for their prior post. It was a big learning experience for me as I thought I still had a few months before I needed to worry about egg laying.

I also wanted to pass along some of my notes and a few pic's that I took in hopes that it will help someone else down the road.

BTW: I used a wireless nanny cam to keep an eye on her for about two weeks leading up to the event to prevent her from being disturbed by me checking on her. It was really interesting to see what she does when she doesn't think anyone is watching. Also, one interesting thing I noticed that I have not seen on this forum or anywhere else. While she was covering the hole she would wrap her tail around the lower vines in the cage to get leverage will digging. I think it really helped her save some energy and I would recommend providing some low hanging vines to help your girl get her job done easier.

05/20/2010 – The day we purchased her
09/26/2010 - Weight 120g
09/27/2010 - Vet visit (xray was positive for eggs, but no ETA on if/when she would lay them)
09/28/2010 – Replaced smaller bin with a new 14L X 14W X 11.5D bin and play sand
10/04/2010 - Weight 120g
10/10/2010 - Weight 132g
10/13/2010 - Stopped eating (one Waxie)
10/17/2010 - Weight 124g (constantly pacing the cage, but no interest in the bin)
10/19/2010 - She started digging in the corner of the bin in the morning and possible ate one cricket. She was digging at 10PM that night.
10/20/2010 - She was covering the hole in the morning and ate 13-15 crickets. Weight 80g (she layed 61 eggs)
10/24/2010 - Weight 86g (no poop yet)

You might want to cut back on her feeding and a couple of degrees in the temperture now so that she won't lay such a big clutch the next time.

Glad it all worked out well!

I agree… I was surprised to find that many eggs. What type of feeding schedule do you have for your females?

Question about the temperature… I understand the popular opinion is to keep the temperature around 80 degrees for a female veiled. Is that the basking spot or the average temperature of the enclosure? If this is the basing spot, are there any increased concerns about proper digestion and respiratory infection at the lower temperatures? Also, how do you deal with the outside temperature? I try to keep her outside as much as possible (weather permitting) to get natural sunlight.
