what should i use and how do i make the sand moist enough?

i use a 15" deep open top plastic bin filled with a 50/50 blend of play sand and black earth kept just moist enough that a tunnel can be dug to the bottom without collapsing. I also made a plastic shield for over it to prevent too much water from getting into it from misting/dripper.
