Eye problem (maybe?)

Automatic distilled water mister 3x day

He recently shed and since then it appears his left eye is a little odd looking. The turret isn't swollen, but the opening isn't round either, like it was. The pic I enclosed shows what looks like a little swelling of the actual eye. It's not red and it doesn't seem to bother him i.e. he doesn't rub it, keep it closed, or seem to keep him from eating or his aim. It also doesn't appear to have anything debris or anything in it.

It just doesn't look right to me.

I'm given him a warm distilled water eye wash every day since I noticed it.

Anyone see anything wrong here?

Howdy,

Hard to tell from the photo if there is something wrong. If you can get some close-up photos of the eye it will help to any track changes.

Although I'm betting it doesn't have anything to do with your current concern, there is a lot of (internet) controversy about drinking distilled water. If your tap water is safe for you to drink then it is probably safe to give to your chameleon too. My automated system mists twice a day for 15-20 minutes using tap water.

The usual suspects for eye problems are infections and debri. An infection is likey to get worse and may show milkiness in the eye. If you see the cornea begin to buldge into the slit then think about a vet visit and antibiotics.

Good eye for reference:

Thanks, I'll try to get a better close up of the eye. It doesn't really look like the one you posted, but it's closer than anything I've seen yet.

I use distilled water because Dallas water is high in minerals and other stuff. It will clog up a dripper in day or two and I'm trying to keep my misters clear.

I've read some on the controversies, but I find it hard to believe that pure H2O could be dangerous. It may leach out some minerals, but they would be the excess floating around. But to be safe, I may change to filtered water just to be safe.

Dave,

Now that I've got a better photo, I think it is exactly like the photo you posted. Any home remedies to do while I get a vet appointment?

Thanks,
AFH

I may be wrong but I believe the picture Dave posted is a reference of a good healthy chameleons eye.

The eye opening isn't round. Are you sure it isn't some retained shed? That happens to mine every once in awhile. I can see from the pic that somethings not right but can't tell if it's retained skin or not. Keep us posted. David

Maybe it is retained shedded skin. I'll keep flushing it. Like I said, it doesn't appear to be affecting him and he doesn't seem to be irritated by it.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Howdy,

As far as home remedies go, you could rinse the eye with a squirt of either water or a cheap generic eye saline solution. I don't know if the eye needs it or not. It's not obvious what, if anything is wrong...

I don't understand why people are not seeing what i am. Is it the fact the opening itself is kind of flat on the left hand side and not the eyeball itself. The eyeball seems fine to me, it's the left hand side of eye opening. If it is retained shed, you can hold a warm wet rag on the eye for about 15 minutes as many times as you need to remove it. Good luck doing this however...LOL...Mine hates it when I have to do it. David
