Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species--nosy be panther, sex--male, age--13 weeks. He has been in my care for 3 days now
Handling - Have yet to handle him. He runs away from me if I put my hand out to him to touch him. I pet him once and he didn't seem to mind.
Feeding - So far I've only fed him crickets and he snipes them from everywhere. Today he ate around 9-11 crickets, yesterday about 5 that I know of. I typically feed around 6pm. Gut-loading so far has only consisted of carrots and flukers cricket gel stuff)
Supplements - Zoo-med Reptivite with D3. Zoo-med Calcium w/out D3. Exo-terra Calcium w/out D3 (meant to buy w/ D3). I also have dinofuel, the package was a must buy when it said it enhances color (possibly just a marketing tactic? Does anyone know if it really works). Tomorrow I'm buying Exo-terra Calcium with D3 at petsmart. Yesterday I dusted with Zoo-med calcium and today I dusted with the Reptivite. Not exactly sure on a schedule yet, I need a little help with this part, so it'd be nice if someone could tell me a good dusting regime for a young panther chameleon. And is it more practical to gut-load or dust dinofuel, and how often should I feed my chameleon dinofuel.
Watering - Typically I use a spray bottle 3-5 times a day. I try to mist once or twice a day until the bottle is empty (reptifogger -- 15ish minutes I think). I see him drinking all the time.
Fecal Description - Has pooped daily. Always brown. Consistency is comparable to hard chewed gum (if that makes sense. It's not really soft but not hard). Never been tested for parasites.
History - None, have only had him for 3 days.
Cage Info:
Cage Type - 2x2x4 foot screen cage
Lighting - Reptisun 5.0 18inch for uvb. 75 watt zoo-med reptibasking light for heat. Lights are on at noon and off at midnight.
Temperature - Temperature has been bugging me. I have an analog guage halfway up the side of the cage, and I use a digital thermometer to find basking temp and random temperatures around the cage. Basking gets up to 90, which I think is a bit high. The analog gauge reads around 68 at midway whereas the digital reads 72.0 (which one should I go with here). The bottom of the cage is 71.8 (digital reading). Lowest overnight temp is around 60 (should I invest in a night heat lamp?)
Humidity - Humidity hovers between 45 and 55%. Wisconsin is quite dry, but I heard it's beneficial to have a lower humidity as long as it's above 40% because bacteria won't grow as quick. I use an analog gauge.
Plants - 1 live plant and 1 fake (plan on replacing in the near future). The live plant is a weeping fig (ficus benjamina)
Placement - Cage is in my room on top of a desk. The cage is elevated a little less than 3 feet off the ground, so the top of the cage is roughly 7 feet from the floor. It isn't near any fans or air vents and is a low traffic area.
Location - southeastern Wisconsin, USA. 10 miles from Lake Michigan.
Current Problem - Yesterday I noticed his left eye was closed for long periods of time while his right eye was open. He would only open it when eating and when I would gently shook the cage to see if he would open it. Today I haven't really noticed him keeping an eye shut, but maybe he was doing it when I wasn't around.
If you read all of that you'll notice I have many questions. So if anyone could provide answers to the questions and/or a reason for his eye, I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!
