Eye Question ?????

Chameleon Enthusiast
I have noticed the last few days that my chameleon Boomer is closing his one eye off and on. I don't think it is a Vit A deficiency. It looks to me as if there is something in the bottom of the turret. I could be wrong, but there is something going on at the bottom of his eye on the inside. I don't know if he got poked with something or what. I tried to flush it out to no avail. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow afternoon but was wondering....How do they get something out of the eye if he closes it when you go to touch it? Does the vet have to put him under?

A closed eye can be caused by so many things. It can be as simple as "he's beginning to shed" to something as complex as a sinus infection- and many things in between. Good that you are having the vet take a look at it. I would be surprised if he needed a procedure that would warrant general anesthesia.

Thank you for responding! I know there are a variety of causes it could be. I was just wondering if it came down to the vet seeing something in the eye socket how he would go about removing it. Hopefully it is nothing too serious. I am glad I am taking him.

Carol, have you tried giving him a nice long shower? I have had that help several times. Boomer is such a gorgeous cham hate to see anything happen to him. Good luck and best wishes.

In a sense yes, but outside. I have him outside mostly, and I have a mister that I got from Lowes. I attach it to the hose and let it run over the cage.I have also tried the hose nozzle on a low setting and letting that bounce off the plants and onto him. He got his eye wet and was moving his eyeball all around. He had it shut for a little before he actually went to sleep last night ugh. Today he has not closed his eye yet that I know of but I am not out there every minute looking either. I still feel like something is not right. I am taking him to vet anyways at 2:15 just to be on he safe side. Maybe he will spot something I cannot. And thank you for the well wishes!

I took my three month old Panther to my herp vet two weeks ago as he started closing his right eye and rubbing it on his vines. I did all the usual things first, misted him much more, in fact soaked his viv to give him a chance to clean out anything that might be in there, but he carried on doing it, so off he went.

The vet said that it was very difficult to see anything in his eye because he was so tiny and he kept closing it when she tried to shine a light into it. She said that in order to get a good look, he would need to be sedated - I took this to mean anaesthetic, but she suggested that he might well get rid of it on his own, so didn't want to go down that path just yet. She told me to wash his eye daily with sterile saline drops to see if this helped and if no good to bring him back.

The saline did help and he is no longer closing his eye or rubbing it, so I think that whatever was in his eye that was irritating has gone.

Our boy monty had an eye issue for months. I kept flushing it and long showers. Vet couldn't find anything wrong. After a couple months I thought I saw something in his eye so flushed more. Eventually it cleared up on its own.
