Eye washing

Good morning everyone!

I am still new to the chameleon family and I am wondering about chameleons' washing out their eyes. I have read numerous times in different forums/blogs that one of the important reasons to mist vs just having a dripper is so the chameleons have the opportunity to wash out their eyes. I am wondering what exactly this looks like. Do they just blink a lot once there is water on their face, or do they actually rub their eyes with their leg/foot?

I misted my little guy this morning and he scampered into the corner (I don't think he cares for this misting first thing in the morning ) but when I finished I noticed he had his eyes closed but then he would open one sort of slowly and then close it again. He did this with both eyes for at least a few minutes. He is wide wake and alert and looking around fine now.. so I am just wondering if that was him cleaning out his eyes or... maybe did I mist him in his face too much?

They will blink and rub the eye against the turret. It can look pretty freaky. Their eye will sink into their head a bit when they do it.

That is part of what they do to clean them out. They will also pull the turrets in and bubble them out where it looks like a little ball is being moved around under the skin of the turret, it looks really creepy but they are just cleaning. He may run from it now but it is super important to keep it up. I prefer an automatic mister since it gives a much finer mist. Plus a I have a rain dome that simulates rain. My panther runs to it. He will also just sit with his eyes closed with his face in the mist and move his eyes around while closed.
