Fake tree?

Well, i keep bouncing between projects but this one has sort of stuck as something i might do!

Basically, i want to build a fake tree root. Something quite big to fill the back of a large cage. I think something along these lines (apologies that the 2nd pic is massive!):

Anyway, my proposed strategy is to use polystyrene to form the tree in blocks and then carve it to look like a tree (this will take ages i know, but what else is there to do at weekends :p). Then i sort of become stuck! I want to coat it in something that will make it look like a tree but also want it to be durable. Do you think grinding up bark and mixing it with a cement mix reinforced with bonding agent will do the job and look good? It should give it strength and texture and providing I get the colour right I think it'll look ok but what do you guys think?

The tree could be up to 8' tall and at the base be 2' in diameter (with roots coming off etc) which is why I don't think I'd be able to use a real tree! :p

Cheers all!

I know terrarium designers and builders create backdrops like this and I think they use various types of expanding spray foam (Great Stuff or some such stuff) to mold the roots. Then before it sets they etch, mold, and press bits of bark etc. into the surface. Some web browsing on terrarium building sites (some don't actually have animals in them...just decorative) could give you ideas easier and lighter than cement. Might check links from dart frog tank display sites.

Yeah, I've been all over dendroboard looking at how to do it. I think it's possible! It should be hellishly good if it works out! Might have a go trialing it this weekend!
