So I have had my baby chameleon for a week now. When I feed him he won't come out of hiding so I have to put his bowl with crickets in the cage and leave the room until he is done. Is this normal? I see on videos all the time of people putting the bowl in the cage while holding it and they will come out and eat it. Will my chameleon always be petrified of people??

It's normal. You're new to him. Eventually he'll loosen him up. Handfeeding will help later on.

Hopefully not. Give him time to settle. It's best to feed him in the morning after the first misting and no later than 3 hrs before bedtime so he has time to digest them. It's good he uses a cup as loose crickets in his cage will annoy him at night. Hopefully he will get used to you. What kind is he? Any chance of a pic?
He is a veiled. I have a video on youtube of him eating from the bowl. i set up a camera on a tripod... Hard to get a pic of him without him running away

mine normally runs away from me when i go in there into her little hiding spot that the plant i have in her cage has conveniently made.. but when i start getting the crickets out and she sees them, she slowly comes out and goes after them.. mines about 8 weeks old now (i believe...) and she's my first.. so glad i went with a chameleon than a different pet!

its a normal thing. they have to learn to trust you, and associate you with food.
give him time, hes tiny, youre big, and eventually you can hopefully hand feed him and hold his cup.
my guys were the same way. my male veiled wouldnt eat unless i wasnt in the room, but now, he hand fees hornworms from me.

Yep, everyone has this problem
Move very slowly, try to get him to come to you by holding onto his first cricket of the day, he'll learn eventually that you aren't going to eat him. Maybe he'll even try to eat you.........if you're lucky........Similar threads
