Hello,

I've read on another board, a breeder of chams, is only feeding his adultes 15 crickets a week...is this adequate? I don't want to call him out before I know for sure, but I find it way too little.
Thanks

Hi,

depends on how big the chameleon is, what species and the size of the crickets;)
But in general the majority of the chameleons living in captivity getting too much food. A really good water supply is propably the most important thing.
There are also some species, like parsonii who are eating sometimes for months nearly nothing.

Best regards
Benny

What type of chameleon is it? / are they?
Controlling a females diet also reduces egg production and can thereby extend her life. Adults in general dont need to eat buckets of prey. So long as the animals are healthy, not skinny, presumable they are getting enough.

I might be more upset that only crickets are offered, than I would be about the amount?

Here is a sample of what my male panthers might get in a typical week. Its not that much more than the equivalent of 15 crickets.

Day 1: one Cricket (vitamin dusted) and 2 small mealworms (calcium dusted)
Day 2: 3-6 crickets (gutloaded and calcium dusted)
Day 3: 2 Silkworms
Day 4: 2 Crickets (gutloaded and calcium dusted) and/or 1roach
Day5: 1 silkworm, 1 phasmid
Day 6: 1 superworm, 2 small isopods, 1 butterworm
Day 7: 1 or 2 crickets (gutloaded and calcium dusted), 1 silkworm

i cant say any thing about this cause my guy is a pigg at 7 months old he will eat 12 crix and 4 super worms on average a day.. and if he doesnt eat them that day he will add those to the next day.

do you gutload your crickets while they sit and wait to be put in the cage.. or do you gutload the crickets while there in the cage, cuz i gave them these oranges and shit all 100 crickets died .. so i had to by another 100, so im deciding if i should leave food in the cage for the crickets, or if i should feed them before there in the cage, so there gutloaded once there in

The reason why you perceive your cham to be a pig is because the cham is programmed to eat when food is available. In the wild, chameleons can go months without finding insects to eat, so naturally they will eat when given the opportunity. Most growing chameleons, aka your chameleon, will do just fine eating 5-12 food items a day but keep in mind your cham will develop more steadily and live longer with a more modest diet.
