Female or Male

Hello there,

I've been having my chameleons for about 4 months already. How do I know if it's a female or male? What features should I look for. When I bought the chameleon they said it was a female but now I'm just curious as to how we know if it's a female or a male.

It depends on what chameleon it is. Different species got different ways to tell. Post us a picture with visible hind legs (Veild chameleon) or tail in profile (panther chameleon)

First thing you should look for in chameleon is the color, in most species of chameleon the male is more colorful. Another thing you should look for is the extra digit on the hind legs of the chameleon (as shown in the picture below). Also when a male chameleon hits a certain age he will expel sperm plugs which I will put a picture of below and in some cases you will see hanging out of the poor guy. If you have a female chameleon you should seriously look into setting up a laying bin for her very soon because she can become egg bound which is a serious problem.

There is no exact time that we know female chameleons start laying eggs. However it is important to keep a laying bin in her cage so that when the time comes she is ready and will not become egg bound.
