does anyone know if the ficus banyan tree or Ficus benghalensis is safe for chameleons? i saw one in hawaii and thought the way it grew was perfect for chameleons, and doing some research they can grow inside with high humidity. any help would be much appreciated. i checked several safe plant lists but couldn't find this particular ficus on any list.

I don't know of any ficus trees that are a problem for chameleons. But if you are able to get to ficus banyan trees and share with me, we are friends for life.

thanks laurie. i was just gonna grow from seeds but i know that there are places online that sell them grown. you can get the seeds from http://seedrack.com/04.html

from what i learned online they become more of a bonsai tree when grown indoors. i was planning on setting up the seeds in a empty chameleon cage with mister attached for extra humidity and watering and letting it grow. when it got big enough i would just transplant it into my chameleons cage or move my chameleon to the new cage. the seeds are pretty cheap but if you buy them grown they can be expensive. and i've had bad experiences with shipping trees.

Says there part of it is poisonous...

Every ficus is slightly poisonous for mammals. Most Mammals need to ingest a lots of leaves to get first intoxication symptons like irritated mucosa, but some (rabbits especially) get sick by eating just three leaves and fall over convulsioning. Ficus sp. got furocumarines and some flavonoid compounds.

In contrast, reptiles may be not that sensitive. Well, it seems to be no problem to have a ficus around to climb on and eat a leaf sometimes for a chameleon or other reptiles. I would take care of chameleons who want to eat the whole tree ;).
