Fire hazard

Help.....
My husband is all freaked out that if we keep a basking dome light on all day it will start a fire. I have it clip to the top of my cage angled down. The screen is fiberglass material. Anyone know of stats out there if there has been fires. What caused them and what I can do to show him that it ok.

Also, how long do you need to keep the lamp on? Is it all day?

The fiberglass can definitely be a hazard when comes to the lighting. It can also be a problem because crickets can chew through it over time.

I know it is clipped to the cage and angled down, but if it fall directly onto the fiberglass screen, you could have some serious problems.

Do what you can to switch the fiberglass screen to aluminum screen.

If the lamp fell directly on the fiberglass it might 'burn' but not burst into flames. It would just get hard and crispy. Be sure to check if it is fiberglass... where did you buy the cage? or did you make it?

Most commercial cages arent fiberglass screen. They are coated aluminum screen which is fine. As long as you have everything set in place and not balanced onthe edge of the cage you shouldnt have any issues. I'd be more worried about if I had a cat them jumping on the cage and knocking a light off the cage. (one reason I have no cats)

Go Screen!

Yes, If it were me I would go with an all screen enclose, IMO that is best for the Cham anyway. As for the lighting... recommended is 12 hours on and 12 hours off set schedule.

I made the cage. I should probably change the top screen. I don't want to change the whole thing it was a lot of work. I am going to cup feed, so I hope the rest will be ok.
