For Temporalis Owners

Can any Temporalis owners answer a few general questions for me? I am getting my set up ready for when I see some Temps for sale.

- Is the setup the same exact layout for brevs?
- Do they prefer a long glass cage or a Tall cage?
- How many would be considered a manageable starter colony for breeding?
- How do you determine their sex?
- Who has some for sale right now or has eggs incubating?

Any answers will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Marc,

setup is nearly the same. I've kept them in 40x40x60cm as well as in 80x40x50cm (lxdxh)
I used moss plates and many thin branches with lichens to create a "jungle"-like enclosure.
If you keep them well, they are not very problematic. So you don't need to many specimen to create a starter colony. Maybe three groups of 1.2-1.3.
To sex them is very easy, the males have really fat stump tails, the females have really thin tails. If you make a google picture search you will see it directly. They lay just two-four eggs per clutch, so it's always better to have enough females. I've incubated mine directly in the enclosures and many juveniles hatched this way

Best regards
Benny

I find that my female prefers to hide in much denser foliage than my brevs, and she doesn't move quite as much as them. She still does use the whole 29 gallon tank though.

I only have one on accident, so I don't know what it's like to have more than one, and what is manageable

How do you manage temps during the summer? Is it difficult?

I use a small fan to keep it around or below 75. It got really hot for a few days, so I tried putting some ice cubes in the soil (covered and not exposed) and my pygmies tended to gravitate towards the cooler areas by the underground ice.

Ice cubes are a good idea. I was thinking about installing two computer fans. One on top to suck out hot air and another about mid level to push in cold air. I am just concerned that it will give me trouble with humidity levels.

Your method got me to think that I can install a container with ice cubes in front of the fan pushing air in. That way the air will be a cool breeze.

You don't want to have a fan directed into the cage. The one to draw air out would work, but don't have one inside. Maybe you can try to keep one room cooler than the others for montains and what not?
