There is a good chance that the new home that I am moving into will not allow any pets. So I'm trying to find a responsible owner to give my 10 month old male veiled to. Tomorrow I will find out if the landlord will allow me to bring him. So the offer is not for sure yet. But I want to have a home for him just in case I can't bring him. Sorry, I will not ship him and the new owner must meet with me in order to pick him up. I have a temporary cage I just made out of pvc pipe in case you don't have a cage. I live will be moving to San Jose, California and will be willing to drive anywhere in the bay area or Sacramento area to drop him off. I also have a number of feeders that will go with him too. (500 dubia, Zophoba, and silkworms.) I will only give my cham to a responsible adult, sorry no kids. So I figured that I'd give chameleonforum members first dibs, since everyone here has access to good husbandry info. Just PM me if any of you are interested. I really don't want to give him up, but this is all last minute for me. I will post an update tommorow night (Sunday, September 30) if I will give him away. Thanks.

I have good news and bad news guys. The good news is that I get to keep my cham!!:) The bad news is that you guys don't get to have a chance to take him...:( The land lord said it would be alright as long as he stays in the garage. Now I have to figure out how cold it gets out there at night time winter temps.

I never understood how a chameleon can be considered a 'pet' pet... I mean to me a reptile falls under the fishtank category, simply because it doesn't roam the house/appartement freely(in most cases), doesn't maky any noise, and any place that says no pets, will usually allow a fishtank....

I think all reptiles get a bad reputation. When you talk to people that don't really know anything about reptiles and say you own a lizard. The first thing that comes to mind is an iguana. They will automatically think that it will be huge and take up alot of room.

I'm glad you get to keep him!

The apartment we moved into said no pets too, but once I showed our landlady Cricket, she said he's fine as long as his food doesn't escape :p Maybe try showing yours? When he realizes the cham won't be roaming the house, he may let you... if not... invest in a space heater for the garage!

My apt. complex asked if we had pets when we were filling out the app. and my GF and I told them we had a chameleon and they were like "what is that"? and we told them and they were like "oh... whatever" lol

The basic rule is that chameleons don't qualify as "pets"
"pets" smell, make noise, stain the carpets and leave little presents
laying around outside on the lawn for people to step on.

So don't even mention them except to say "a few fish tanks and stuff like that".
This was something I learned early on with my redtailed boa (java).
and yes there is an irrational fear that some people harbor regarding
anything that doesn't sport fur.
They actually think that these animals spend their entire lives pondering ways to eat their little children.
"sigh...."

Anyway, You may want to have your set up in the winter to keep him warm.
Get a timer for the light and a infrared heat lamp IF (s)he had to stay in the garage.
Make sure there's some sort of insulating cover to hold in the warmth
when it gets REALLY COLD.
(be careful of burns)
let the heat lamp running 24/7 until someone gets a clue and you can bring them indoors.

I say just bring him inside. My brother and I lived at an apt. building that said we could only have one cat. HAHA we had three. They even came up a couple of times to inspect some stuff and never noticed. They either thought we went through cats like underwear or didn't care, they got the deposit money.

Please Don't put your chameleon in the garage!!!!

You can't control the temparature good enough and he could get sick and die. I have many exotic pets, some that aren't even legal in this state, and I just don't tell my landlord. I'm not supposed to have fish tanks in my house but I was unwilling to give up my 5 year old saltwater tank. So I just don't say anything. I'd rather have to move again than to have a chance of one of my beloved friends loosing their life. If you must keep him in the garage make sure you put a space heater in there. Even with a night lamp the surrounding air could still be too cold. Good luck and congrats on keeping your friend!!!

Too late. My cham has been in the garage for almost a year now. It has survived two winters and is doing fine. But thanks for the concern. I've been able to keep temps at a stable position day and night. I use different types of bulbs to keep day temps and ceramic heat bulbs to keep his cage nice and warm at night. I covered up all the drafts leading to his cage too. He has a total of 6 lamps that keep the temps at a comfortable 80*F for his cage during the winter months. The temps never drop below 60*F on the coldest nights.
