Future Plans on Cham cages..

Well right now my cham cages are in different rooms and I would like to get them in the same room and next to each other and I got a great idea from another member here today and these are my future plans. (remember the stand will be a birch wood fish tank stand with canopy to cover uvb and heat lamps) LOL and please don't ask me why sancho looks like a rabbit I suck at art without photoshop

Still trying to figure out how I'm going to get the cages to drain the water they hold on the bottom where the water would go into a bucket to be dumped.

For drainage you can pick up a PVC 2" drainage cap from pretty much at any hard ware store and cut a hole in the bottom with a 2inch hole saw. Then connect either some 2" hosing or pvc if you wish and pipe it to your drainage bucket.

I can show you a picture of mine if you like to give you an idea but it was really simple. I just sealed the cap with some PVC cement and I'm good to go.

I actually found some places that sell the stand and canopy for $125-$200 depending on the design and color so I'm looking into it.

Ok, so you want to build into your cages to create the desired drainage effect. There are then 3 options I guess:
1) buy a shower tray of the right size to fit your cage (or near enough) and that'll do the job, however, its unlikely that you'll find one the exact right size and they're pretty expensive too
2) you drill small holes through the bottom of each enclosure and let the water drip out into separate collection trays but this will take up space for your 'poo' colony!
3) (my personal favourite and what I plan to do for mine) is build yourself a 'fake rock drainage floor' using this sort of technique: http://www.captivebredreptileforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6932 Just buy a sheet or two of polystyrene and build some contours (doesn't have to be massive to work) with it, then coat it in a mortar/tile grout mix and apply a few coats. This will literally dry like a rock (you can hose it down with a pressure washer with only minimal damage) so it'll easily take mistings and drippings etc and just make a drainage point at the lowest point and it'll drain away all the water and stuff you don't want pretty easily! Use a funnel with mesh covering it (so nothing can climb in or out of your enclosure) for the the actual collection bit as this will allow you to connect some hose to direct the flow of water into your collection bucket! Job done!

There are probably more options, but these are the only ones I can think of!

I used a normal sink drain basket (normaly used for kitchen sinks) for my drainage system which is easily found at home depot. Apply some silicone cocking under the basket to prevent leaks. I then attached a clear 2" tube to the basket joining the 2 cages together. and your set. i can take some photos if needed.

Tim,

Get 2 bar drains, flush mount them through the plastic bottoms and plumb them the same way you would do a bathroom sink. The end of the pipe flowing into a 5gal homer bucket. The weight of the plants will make the water flow to the center to the drain. I would love to draw you up a diagram, but I'm really bad at paint. I could draw you a picture then take a picture!?!? Lemme see what I can do.

my 2 ideas one in orange, and the other in green. the orange would be incorporating 2 separate drip catchers, and putting in to drains connecting to a T fitting with the bottom draining much like a 2 section kitchen sink. the green one would be made with a super long tote, or pan of some sort, and it just being bowed in the middle over the drip collector.

One of my last "home improvement" was to get rid of the old-water bucket and pipe that drain right into an existing floor drain all the way down to the basement!!!

No more emptying that 5-gal old-water bucket anymore!!!!!

The othe one was tap into a water pipe via a saddle and connecting it to the misting 5-gal bucket. Added a valve right by the bucket and no more carrying that bucket around!!!

Next one if I can teach the cham to go get his own food... but then, what would be the fun of it, right?!!

Jay - who said I was going to put lamp shades in the chams cages? LOL! And is that two dubias getting it on at the top level?

By the way Ryan.....it took me 3 hours to draw those "Cham Eatting" plants....they are use at your own risk!



Seriously, plumbing that would be pretty easy, and that bucket may only need to be dumped once a week or so.

Not worried about the holes. Both my chams eat full size crickets and fairly large dubia's and when it comes to worms they like em big (silks & horns) Plus both of them hand feed
