giant caterpillar

i live in Tucson, AZ and just found a giant 4 inch caterpillar that is green and has some purple and white stripes but looks like a big horn worm.would i be able to feed this to my cham?

Personally, Id stick with captive bred feeders. You have a better idea of where they came from, what they are, and their nutritional value(thought you might have to do some research). I wouldn't take a chance on a wild caught insect, it's simply a risk that isn't worth taking. I believe that when you choose to take responsibility for an animal, in a sense it becomes your child, and therefore you should only provide the very best for them.

I would guess you have found a tomato worm, aka hornworm aka goliath worm. It probably was feeding on tomato, so it has toxicity for your Cham. My guess is there is a garden nearby?

If you dont know exactly what it is so you can look up its possible toxicity and if you dont know for certain what it has been eating, please dont risk it

i wouldn't feed any locally caught moths or butterflies.


unless its a confirmed painted lady... but then again wild caught animals are always questionable.

On a side note, I caught a Cabbage looper this morning. It was feeding on my Sunflower plant leaves. It went zero to 3 seconds from perch to tongue.
