Havent gone bug collecting in almost a yr! Wow, time flies.... We had such a drought last yr from Mid March til Nov of 2011 that it really wasnt worth the time or effort to even try and fight the misquitos and heat. We are finally out of our drought conditions. Im hoping after we got over 11" of rain since the first of Jan we will have plenty of hoppers and katydids to snag for my bigger breeders. We also have had a really mild winter as far as low temps go so I ought to snag at least some stuff.

Dont tell me about the dangers Ive been keepring chams for over 15 yrs and Ive always fed wc bugs to my chams. Nothing is better than wc insects as some say "they are the nectar of the gods" for chams. (quote courtesy of Jim/Cham Co.)

I wouldnt nag you on wc bugs... sure you know what youre doing...
Im just jealous i cant find wc bugs... and any i do i dont want to feed off cuz i live in an apt complex.. where im sure they use pesticides.

I know what you mean cami. Im currently in a condo myself. Lucky I have a garage attached so I can raise/keep my dubia & cricks. I have to drive about 15 mins to the spot I found a cpl of yrs ago. Its perfect, its a cleared field next to river. Ive had good results there most times I go. The only downside is its full of poison ivy. So I gotta be careful where I stick my arms/hands.

I found a wild mantis ooth on the morning hike today

Dude, Ive never found/caught a wild mantis while bug hunting. (Your just bragging now Steve) lol Ive had a cpl fly up to my back porch before but I always released them because I caught em in my neighborhood and I was afraid of pesticides.

I got a new net last wknd so I hope to break it in today on my day off. lol

i don thave a garage. but i have 3 bedrooms, so my bugs stay in there.
i mgiht be able to find a field.... hmmm...

You like those Jerusalem crickets? Those things have nasty bites and are just icky in general. I'll let you know when I start seeing them at the fields.

There are not any adult hoppers at my fields yet! I find lots of ooths though. I have TONS of European mantids and a few Mediterranean mantids every summer.


Edit: if you find out what mantids are in your normal hunting spots, you can buy ooths and help populate the areas. A lot of people just buy Chinese mantid ooths, but I think it's best to buy the species that already inhabit the area.

The weather here has been so spring like I think the bugs are confused lol I was walking today and had a pretty good size hopper hit me in the head lol

A newly molted one this time of year? That is a surprise! Although it has been an extremely warm winter even hear in central California. I have found Graybirds adults in the cold before never nymphs though.

dagnabit! - still under snow. late march some stuff starts appearing. but, really, here in Idaho and a mile up, things don't get going until June with hopper type insects showing up midsummer.

I went over the weekend to the Poppy fields and found a couple of small grasshoppers and nothing else. But as the weather warms up bugs will come out. I also have a patch of Raspberries and a couple of Boysenberrie plants that atract grasshoppers and other bugs. Can't wait for the bug season.
