got my dubia colony!

And I love 'em already!

They don't chirp.

They don't smell rank.

They don't bounce.

And they're mildly cute. I actually felt a tiny bit bad when I fed them to Otto this morning. Weird.

Good riddins crickets! No more cricket crypts in my basement!

sweet freedom.

Now a quick question:
How many large (big enough to fit between his eyes, L3 L4?) roaches should my veiled be eating daily? I don't want to deplete the colony too fast before it has a chance to get off the ground.

How many did you get? I would let them breed a bit first before you started to feed them off... I got mine a few weeks ago... If that and I am starting to have little roaches zoom'n around the tank... Once they get a get large I will then start to feed some of the smaller once... I am also going to have 1 tank full of full size/mature and one tank of small ones... Just to help speed up feeding... Dont want to feed yourself out of a roach group!

yea .. 200 seems manageable 4 me (how big a container you should have?)
i am new to chameleon :p
so this is my first time handling cricket.
and where do you buy it? can you tell me the website?

what is a dubai colony? lol

I was wondering the same thing, I think it is a type of roach... errr I mean a colony of roaches.

If someone can post some directions on how you breed and care for them I might try them out for my cham.

I don't know what all the stink is about crickets... I keep around 200+ in a keeper I made and my GF and I never smell them. We actually enjoy the sounds they generate from our patio.:D

With a starter colony of 200 dubia, you'll have (even with feeding off nymphs) about 1000 roach surplus in about 8 months.
Keep them warm to stimulate breeding. A heating pad on the lowest setting under one side of the tub works great. Be sure to keep the food on the non-heated side and don't let ANY mold grow in there. Change food out often!!! Mold will kill off your colony faster than anything!

Me too! I went and picked up my order of 600 Dubia. He gave me a very nice mixture of 550 nymphs, smalls, and mediums. He then put in 50 adults. 25 male and 25 female. I also caught a female giving birth last night as well! Too cool

Howdy All,

For those chameleon keepers who are within driving distance of Manhattan Beach, CA, you are welcome to stop by and grab a starter colony of dubia and or lobster roaches for free (sorry, no shipments.) It's always handy to offer roaches to your chameleon and see if there is even any interest in them before you go all the way raising a big colony . Some will eat one right away and then decide to ignore them from then on. Others will lock onto them as a staple. Roaches are one of the easier feeders around. As was mentioned, a dubia colony will expand at around 30 nymphs every couple of months per adult female. Remember the exponent term in your math . Things can get really big, really fast once the colony gets established. Lobsters climb glass, dubias don't . By the way, I usually have a good supply of Wild Eye Reptiles' famous gutload for sale at cost (for local pick-up only.) Toss me an email at [email protected]

Dang it, sure wish I lived in Cali....I'd be there today.

is there any legal or agricultural issues in having them or shipping them?

are there any precautions you have to take as far as keeping them or not letting them loose in an environment like mine where it seems the could become an infestation and f up the balance of nature?

Waht are they?

I have a senegal chameleon and i feed her crickets meal worms and wax worms but i was thinking in extending her diet so dubai are good please answer.

Depends on where you live. In Florida you can't (or aren't supposed to get) any roaches that aren't native because the climate lets any type of bug thrive... I want to start a colony myself but it would be really tough hiding them from the g/f who would kill me if I ordered some!

Then again, I'm not having any issues at all with crix (no smell or anything) and I'm going to start experimenting with silk worms this next month.
