Grape Vine Under UVB Light?

Hello everyone!

I got my chameleon a grape vine plant for his repti-breeze. Im worried that the grape vine will die since it has no "real" sunlight. I do have a Exo-Terra Solar Glo 160 watt Mercury Vapor Bulb on top, but will that keep the grape vine plant alive? Ive tried to google and research grape vines under artificial UVB light, but cant find anything! My vine is about 3 ft tall.

Can anyone tell me how their grape vine does under UVB bulbs?

Thanks,
David

This might help you Grape Vines That Can Be Grown Indoors in the US | Home Guides | SF Gate as I understand it you will need a really big pot though.
my grape vine plant currently has a huge pot. when i bought it, it looked healthy and green. Now, the leaves are starting to to turn more yellowish and shrivel up! It's been under the (Exo-Terra Solar Glo) UVB bulb since I got it home. I've watered it once and misted it probably 6 or 8 times now.

It's not looking very good....

what size cage is yours? a mercury vapor bulb that large puts off a lot of heat. And chameleons can't bask as much as they need in the UVB light because it is also a combination basking bulb. Therefore they receive less uvb or burn themselves.

well, I have 2 cages for him. one is the reptibreeze "medium" size cage which is 16x16x30. The 2nd cage is a DIY homemade cage... made with wood 2x2s and aluminum screen wrapped around it. The dimensions of that cage is 24x24x36. I usually use the Solar Glo MVB when he is in the big cage and I have a zoo med dual dome fixture with 2 zoo med reptisun 10.0 compact florescent bulbs when he is in the medium reptibreeze cage. He loves the medium cage though... he's only about 10 inches from tip of nose to end of tail.

Do you have a digital thermometer? Do you know your temps in the large cage? What kind of chameleon is he? If he's an adult veiled/panther he needs a larger space preferably. The minimum and usual cage size that is prefered for those two species is a 2x2x4ft space. However just making the 2 ft spaces longer would help, giving him more horizontal space would be fine. He would use it all. What you are keeping him in is a breeder's size cage. Which is less than ideal.

I sure do... basking spot is 93-95ish at the hottest spot, other parts of the cage is room temp (low-mid 70s). Thats how I setup both of his cages... if hes in the medium or large one.

Hes a veiled chameleon...

How old is he? 10 inches is rather small for an adult o.o I can't imagine he's an adult. The temps sound right, just watch out if he's spending too much time in the Mercury Vapor bulb basking range, They can cause burns pretty easily because of it.

im not 100 percent sure of his age. He came from a local "mom and pop" pet store that was shut down due to animal neglect/abuse and horrible conditions. I would guess he is 3 months old? The pet store owner had 5 chameleons in a 5 gallon glass aquarium with no uvb or basking light... and only fed maybe once a week! They were in his posession for probably 2 months before he was shut down by animal control. Nobody was able to take him when all the animals were evacuated, so I took him in. i have 3 bearded dragons and breed my own crickets and dubia roaches. I figured one more mouth to feed wouldn't hurt and ive always wanted a chameleon anyways! im just trying to research everything and get him in proper conditions and healthy!

He's most likely around 6-8 months old? 3 months old is entirely to young for 10 inches. Does he have any sign of mbd? It sounds like he should.

I just measured him and he is 8.5 inches from tip of nose to end of tail. The first day I brought him home, he could barely raise himself up on all fours... and didnt eat for 2 days. He is a lot better now. He roams around his cage a little and walks/climbs fine. i wouldnt call him "active", but he is getting better. His appetite is still horrible though... even with proper temps, an "ok" cage setup, and good uvb. He may eat one cricket per day... or one small dubia. He wont touch greens, veggies, or fruit either.

Have you taken him in for a vet check up? He may have some mbd, even minor and that will need to be corrected before he can just go on powdered supplements or else it will only get worse. Does he rest his legs at all? MBD can possibly cause appetite reduction because they feel bad. Do you have any pictures of him? Like his entire body? Have you taken a fecal in?

No vet checkup or fecal. I live in West Virginia (USA) and the nearest vet that will even see a chameleon (or bearded dragon) is 2 hours away! I may have to take him though... I'll take some pics and post them too.

He does look a little thin, and the slight swelling in his back legs is often the sign of the beggining of MBD, though it not always is. Liquid calcium for a few months is the best way to make the swelling go down and stop the procession of the mbd if that's what it is. Usually it causes resting of the limbs as it progresses with chameleons and more swelling will occur. Then the rubberiness and breaking of bones will happen. If you can get him on a liquid calcium supplement after a vet confirms if it's mbd, it is pretty easy to switch them back to powdered supplments. My guy was just recently diagnosed with minor mbd, and all he showed was swelling and leg resting. With just a few weeks of the liquid calcium his swelling has gone down to nothing and he's resting his legs less. Hopefully if a vet confirms the diagnosis it goes smoothly for you. Other things that can cause swelling is gout and arthritis but I think he's too young to have either. There are probably some other things too.

Depends, what's the strength of the liquid calcium? Usually a vet recommend's the dosage.

It's Flukers liquid calcium. Says on the bottle:

Guaranteed Analysis: Calcium not less than 6%

I also have Flukers liquid multivitamin too
