Greenhouse with Melleri is working better than I thought.

So, I converted one of my greenhouses into a space for my melleri. I have tried many enclosures and free ranges for my melleri but this has to be my favorite.

I live in Texas so I was worried about the heat of our summers. It is not easy keeping a greenhouse cool. I ended up building an external frame that suspends Shatex over the outer layer of the greenhouse creating a 6 inch gap between the two. Thanks to my little knowledge of thermodynamics and my brothers! I also placed a cheap a/c unit in the greenhouse. Prior to doing any of this, my greenhouse would reach temps over 100 in the summer afternoon sun with ease. That is without venting of course.

The last ten days here have been brutal with heat indexes reaching 108 in my area. But, this was a perfect situation to see how my greenhouse would hold up to the heat.

I think I have solved my heat problems. During the hottest part of the day, my greenhouse maintained a 79 degree temp. When I kicked on the misters inside, the temp dropped to 71 degrees. At night, I have been able to drop the temps down into the lower 60's with ease.

This excites me, because I may be able to keep more montane species in the greenhouse than previously thought. I didn't want to experiment before I could get a grasp on what temps I could keep. My chameleons love it out there. Natural sunshine and heavy plant growth have made a huge difference in the overall health of the animals I keep in the greenhouse v inside. I don't say that lightly either. I keep very heavily planted enclosures inside and pride myself on natural habitat simulation. But, there is still no comparison. I have melleri that I got off the last import back in April that I played with as far as growth rates are concerned. There were two that were the exact same size and there was only a 8 gram difference between the two. The size of the one inside doesn't even compare to the one outside. Needless to say I will be expanding the greenhouse techniques and pushing to keep more outside this way.

I eventually want to make a greenhouse for a pair of parsons this is gorgeous and I am so happy it is working out for you Joel and your babies are thriving so much.

It looks amazing! Awesome photos of a great space. How many are in the greenhouse right now?

Thank you!

There are 3 melleri that are free ranging on one side of the greenhouse. I also keep a pair of kinyongia mutituberculata and 6 cristatus in there at the moment.

I am thinking about building off the back side of the greenhouse and expanding it another 12 feet or so. That would allow me more space for expanding the free range and maybe placing a shelving system in for more enclosures.

Which one is my girl? You are torturing me. My husband would love a greenhouse!

She is the one in the last pic hovering over the others like King Kong. She is huge and has an appetite to match.

You have some perfect locations for a greenhouse. Richard should build one. He would love it!

Thanks Andee! A year ago, I would have not recommended a greenhouse because of the temperature issues(depending on where you live). But, now that I see they are fairly easily solved, I think it may be the best way to house a chameleon IMO.

I live in central california at the moment. Still a little warm for a montane like a Parsons or a Mellers so I would probably need AC during the day time most of the year. But it'd be worth it, these magnificent creatures deserve the best we can provide.

It would solve the deer problem and satisfy his fascination with mangoes and bananas. And more room for my graciliors. My girl is massive! To think of all the grief she gave me and now look at her!

I think you should give it a try!

They do deserve it!

She is huge!! She eats non stop and she the calmest melleri I have ever had. She is like a dog. She will come down the branches when I walk in never taking her eyes off of my hands. It's hilarious. I am no longer the threat.

Last week my brother wanted to see them. She did not like his presence in the greenhouse at all. She gave quite the display. Coloring and puffing up while shaking the branch she was on like a monkey. It was really impressive.

Are you serious? I would have LOVED to see that. She always puffed her throat out at me until she started hand feeding.

Your pictures show an amazing commitment to create a superb environment for your chameleons. A large species really needs more room than most screen cages.

Well done my friend!

CHEERS!

I appreciate that Nick. I have played around with many scenarios for them, but I think this is going to be end game. They just seem to thrive so well in the greenhouse environment.
