gutloading dubias?

Hi everyone,

2 questions:

1) I want to start a dubia colony to feed my 3 male panthers. Anyone have a suggestion on how many and of what size? I was thinking 300 mixed, with a few extra large females and males, so 310 or so. Okay?

2) What should I feed them once I get them? The websites say fruit and veggies and DOG food, the latter of which I would not want to feed to my chams. Anyone have an alternative protein source for them?

thanks.

NO dog food read sandrachameleons blogs on gut loading they are GREAT
you should get about 300-400 mixed sizes but i would say a little more adult about 170 adults 50 pre-adult- the rest babies

how often do you plan to use these as your feeder? once a week? three times a week? (hopefully no more than that, hopefully you plan to include a variety of prey choices)
I started with fewer than 40, but I wasnt in a hurry and didnt feed many off until I started seeing new young. Heat helps ALOT

as for what to feed them, check this out:

roaches dont need as much protein as people think, and plant based proteins are fine. Alfalfa is great.
if you are looking for an easy option for those days when you cant make your own gutload / provide veggies - try Repashy Bug Burger

thanks so much.

i plan on using these to supplement the cricket and superworm diet, so maybe once or twice per week.

I will check out these blog posts.

thanks

You'll have more than you need soon enough LOL

You may find these links useful too, if you've not kept roaches before:

thanks again, sandra. Odre-ahy's (Kammers) son, Dante, Dr. Gonzo's son, Iceman, and Kneecap's (chameleon company) son, Reggie, thank you, too.

I agree that you won´t need that many if you only feed them from time to time.
I started with about 50 of which only 7 or so were adult about 3 months ago and i do not even use any heating but keep them at room temperature.
Well, by now i have about twice as many as in the beginnig if not more.
I feed them with carrots, apple, potato, cucumber and repashy bug burger which all works well for them.
Today i gave them a bit of hard-boiled egg to give them some protein.
Dunno if they´ll eat it or not but i think you may try.

DinoFuel!!!! Roaches absolutely love the stuff. I have never seen anything like it before. They race over to eat it, as do crickets and superworms. It is totally organic and simple to use.
