Hand taming

How do you get your cham to trust you and hand tame it?

you tame it like any wild stallion.

just kidding. it takes time. be patient, it will happen.

Also, you must understand they may tolerate being held, but will never love it like a puppy. Holding your animal shouldn't be your first objective in keeping it as a pet. Typically, however, over time you will be able to hold your animal with no problems.

Additionally "taming" isnt a great way to describe this interaction with these animals, I would think of it more as a gaining mutual trust.

Don't laugh...but I have a little verse I sing to each of my chams before I do things that can stress them out (hands in cage, misting, etc.). It's not a perfect cure, but it has helped to relax my youngest cham. She used to freak out totally when she saw me, but now she kind of knows I'm coming because she hears the goofy song I'm singing. LOL

I hand feed mine since they were little... as soon as they see me opening their cages they quickly get close to me -specially the male - because they know food is coming!

It will happen? Not always the case. No problems? Eh, you're letting people get their hopes up or set their standards high for their chameleon's behavior.

Don't humanize your chameleon too much. They don't have great hearing and probably only feel the vibrations from your voice.

Don't mind me, but I'll humanize all I want. I love my little gals and I'm doing just fine, thanks. To each his own, eh?

If only I would get a decent tune in my head...I always end up with the corniest songs I remember humming as a kid. At any rate, it's funny to see my teenage son's reaction or his friends watching the eccentric chameleon lady!

Sorry OP, you will soon find out that Syn is the end all be all on these forums.

Syn, I'm just giving my opinion and trying to help this memeber, if I am wrong please correct me politely (and in all due respect you took my post out of context--I did say "typically no problems", not "no problems"), i'm not sure why you insist on continually hating on me? I'm just here to talk chams and learn.

OP, With trust between you and the animal and skill at handling, it is my limited opinion that ANY cham can be held, even a particularly aggressive one. there is a great video on holding an aggressive cham at www.screamelons.com. check out their vids, lots of good stuff from this site sponsor. You may also want to note that as they get to be adults, they sometimes seem to "chill out" more and are less skittish.

I mean to say if your chameleon starts panting like a dog or whistling like a person, there is something wrong with it. Or something along those lines.

I don't feel I was rude in any way. Your reply on the other hand, not so much. I don't see how I hate on you in any way, there are over 12,000 members on this forum (granted they aren't all active) but I can't always tell the difference. You gave your opinion, I gave mine, and I won't call you names for it like you have.

Yes, any cham can be held, but that doesn't mean they want to be held. It is unneeded stress in most cases, though there are exceptions.

sorry if i mistook your post. let's get back to thread topic. I editited my post while you were writing yours btw. I never suggested chams want to be held, quite the contrary actually.

Oh, I do...the older I get, the less I care. I wish I'd been as confident when I was younger! I think I end up 'engaging' with my chams in weirder ways because I don't hold mine too much...I interact with them alot, but mine aren't as hands-on as i read some can be. My veiled is a total brat! But I tell her I'm gonna love her anyway, even when she is hissing and spitting at me. LOL

I wouldn't say that every chameleon is handle-able. My veiled Pan throws a pretty huge hissy fit and usually still acts aggressive when he's out. I've only been able to ninja slide my hand under him a few times (narrowly missing the bite of doom, might I add.) I just dont take him out any more. It's not worth it.

haha! yeah I rarely take my dude out, he just doesn't appreciate it... Unless of course he's completely distracted by a fat super, then he seems to be okay with it. I'm sure if you needed to handle him to get him to a vet or something though, it would be possible. <--- that's what I meant by "handle-able" -- an animal being able to be handled when necessary, not necessarily loving it.
