he gets scared when outside

Whenever i bring Skittles my soon to be 1 year old male panther chameleon outside he turns dark and doesn't move around too much. When you first took you chameleon outside did he/she ever seem scared? I don't keep him out for too long and i make sure he has water and shade so he doesn't get too hot. I just took him outside and put him on a small tree with sunlight, shade, and took out my misting bottle and let him climb a bit but after he took maybe 10 steps he just turns darker and doesn't move much and if I try to pick him up he will get sort of stubborn. Have any of your chameleons done this too? Thanks for the help

My chameleon does te exact same thing but it is also much smaller. He will turn dark and not even attempt to move from my hand.

He's been moved out of his known territory and not "voluntarily". Its a normal reaction to feel intimidated. There's a big bad alien world out there. If you do this regularly he'll eventually get familiar with his outside tree. Chams have very good spatial memories. Just don't get complacent and take your eyes off him while he's outside! Too many chams sneak off and get lost as soon as someone's back is turned.

When I first took our panther, Thor, outside he did seem to be a little scared. But I think that's just because there's so much for the chameleon to take in, there are a lot of new surroundings. But I do also know that chameleons tend to get darker when they bask in the sun, because the dark colors help them retain the heat better. I also noticed with our panther, that he tends not to move around a lot and is content with just sitting on my arm for 10 minutes at a time. I honestly believe he's just enjoying soaking up the sun. From my personal experience, I don't think it's anything you should worry about. I've only been keeping chameleons for the last 1.5 years, so I don't have that much expertise as many other members on this website do, but I hope this helps you.

Yes .. it only takes 5 minutes. Mine had crossed over onto another tree and was trying to cross the street when I found him .. (frantically 30 minutes later ) I will never make that mistake again

I have a couple veileds that get so upset when I take them outside I don't even bother anymore. It usually takes them a few days to stop watching the sky and calm down again. I decided the stress likely wasn't worth it.
