im looking to get another heat source as where i live its quite cold in the morning and was wondering if heat cables are safe?? i just need something to heat the overall temperature of my tank. its a 4 foot high mesh tank. im covering the back and sides with polythene today so heat doesnt escape so easy.

thanks!

You should be fine as long as your room doesn't drop below 50º F. Chameleons need a good temp drop at night, they benefit from it.

You can always use a room heater to bump up the rooms ambient temp. Just keep it around 60-70ºF. Also never leave a heater on all night, it'll dry out the air too much which is bad for your chameleon.

My room has no insulation so it gets pretty hot/cold during the seasons. I'll have to start bumping up my rooms ambient temp during the winters. I plan on hooking up a heater on a timer for an hour so my room doesn't drop below 55ºF.

Hopefully I answered your question :)

as low as 50f? thats quite cold? haha my aim was to keep it about 18-20c. think ill need another heat source to warm up the tank anyway because the basking heat doesnt heat much of the tank up. but think ill get something to heat my room up that way we both benefit ;)

thank you

Yeah I've heard 60's and 50's. Not sure how UK weather is so I told you 50's so you won't freak out lol. 50's is the bare absolute minimum for me. I wouldn't want my cham to sleep in that kind of temperature. If you can keep it about 60º*you'll be perfectly fine. Madagascar weather can drop down to about the low 50's, so i figured our panther chams would be fine.

Just make sure it's not too dry and hot. I think you're headed in a good direction and know what you're doing.

i did a hell of alot of research before getting one but you can always learn more! :) im just paranoid haha i dont want him cold in the day as ive put him in a bigger tank. ideally i would like the tank ambient temp about 24-25c then basking at 30-33c. basking is ok but the lower half of my tank is just room temp :( the air where i live is quite humid its about 35-40%

We're all paranoid...I know I am to this day atleast lol

Just be sure to keep your temps above 60º and you'll have 0 worries. This is what allot of well established members have told me. Some have said 50º too, but i like to stick with 60º*to be on the safe side.

The lower half is fine at room temp. It allows your cham to choose his temp levels. Also helps regulate his body temp allot better. When he's done basking and too hot, he'll move lower to cool down. When he's cold, he'll go back up and bask. Also have different levels of basking spots so he can choose what temp is best for him, He'll know.

30c would be 86f so I wouldn't go much higher than that with the basking temp and my ambient temp sits between 73-77 and drops to 62-66 at night, if you struggle at night buy a 250w oil radiator to put in the room, it will just turn on when it's to cold or put in on a timer to come on for 2-3 hours over night

its mainly from 5am to 7am when its coldest in my room as all the warmth from the night before has gone and theres no heating on. his basking bulb comes on at 7

Sounds kinda natural to me! Your cham will be used to a warm sunrise! ;)
