I have a baby panther.. I say baby, he's coming up 6 months and growing daily.

He is getting a terrarium upgrade next month (exo terra terrarium 90cm w x 45 cm d x 90cm h) and I'm worried about heating and getting the right temperatures.. he is currently getting a 10 degrees range from hot and cool ends so currently is fine.. I was just wondering about heat mats and thoughts on them as don't think a general 100w basking spot will cover it.

I work in a pet shop myself and recommend mats for beardies, snakes etc.. if I was to get a heat mat it would be on a mat stat to keep a steady temperature and would be placed on the side wall rather than the floor.

Help!?

do not get a heat mat! your cham could crawl on it and wont be able to get off fast enough and will get burned. they are not for chameleons and are definitly not recommended to be put in your enclosure. in my opinion your 100w should do just fine. right now in my 2 cages i use a 50w and a 60w and the temps are perfect. im sure someone with a little more experience will chime in and tell you the same.

Awesome thanks.. I'll have to play with temperatures before I move him.

yeah its not very difficult. what i did was buy the metal circular dome light fixture from walmart for like 5 bucks. it has like a clip thing on it and i clip it to the side of my cage so i can adjust how far away it is in turn adjusting the temp till i get it right
