I held a crested gecko today at petsmart:)

Now I'm curious about care and whatnot, even though Jared said no.

So what all do they entail?? Are they loveable or just to look at? The one I held was hyper!! Are they all hyper??
 
I have a pair of cresties - my first was from a private breeder and he has always been calm and sweet. My female was from a larger breeder via a pet store and she obviously wasn't handled much until I got her. She was REALLY skittish and tended to bite. She has a really strong hunting instinct, bless her!

What I like is the fact that when all the lights go out, the chams go to sleep and the cresties wake up, so I get time to spend with all of them! I am going to breed them in 2013 - I am just going to post a thread with new pics of 'Team Spluffie'!

Yours are beautiful!! Actually team spluffie got me interested in them he he :) maybe I can work on Jared whenever yours hatch:D
 
They are really sweet! The typical room temp of a house is perfect for them. They don't generally need any heating in the way chams do. Anything of 85 and over for any length of time can kill them. In a way they are very much opposite to cham. I struggled more with their care than chams! Finally after 2 years I think I have my head around it all! They need misting twice a day and they will drink from shallow bowls - I've seen both mine drink this way.

I love the way they lick their eyeballs to clean them and how they turn ther toes upwards to 'unstick' them before they jump! You can get so many different colours (morphs) - my most wanted is a Halloween Harlequin which is dark brown/almost black and orange.

I have a larger vivarium ready and I am am looking forward to kitting it out for them and putting them together! I would love a pic of them really close together instead of the separate pics I have got until now. They only lay two eggs at a time so that will be far more manageable for me than a huge clutch of baby chams all at once!
 
I'm not sure of the size gallon wise - an exo terra 45 x 45 x 60cm is plenty enough room for an adult pair as long as there are plenty of places for each to hide away from the other. I didn't use UV until recently - I had to buy a new control unit for Monty's big cage and made use of his old one for the cresties. I figured it can do no harm especially if she is going to be producing some fertile eggs! The breeder I got Splat from has bred hers for several years and never used UV. I also have a small wattage desk lamp over my cages - more to simulate a definite night and day than for heat.
 
Cresties are nocturnal, which means they don't need UV. They wouldn't encounter it in the wild, except maybe on late evenings when the sun is almost gone. But they do hide away all day and come out to hunt at night, so providing a UVB bulb is not necessary.
 
No, they are quite cheap to feed - a pack of their powdered cgd lasts ages. you just make some up as needed. I usually have appropriately sized crix and dubias for the chams anyway so I offer them to the cresties as well.
 
we love ours, have a breeding pair and 3 babies available for now, our female has never really liked being held and we always call her a flight risk, but our male is very calm and will just hang out with you!!!

our babies are all great hunters and enjoy their crickets!!!

care is beyond easy, tank, food and care!!!!
 
I need to do some research and work on my mom and bf to get me one!! :)

Would a ten gal be OK for a baby?? Can they be kept in screen vivs?
 
you wouldn't want them in screen as they have sticky feet and like to climb all over there enclosure, but in saying that I don't know if it would hurt them!!!

a 10 gallon would be great
 
A 10 gal is fine for a baby but remember that these geckos are arboreal as well, so they will like something tall when they're older.
 
I'm new and I'm trying to not mess up. I have two cresties and they are the greatest!:) I hold them a ton and they love it! They've never told me otherwise anyway :D
