Hello from Houston

Thought I would make a bit of an intro. thread. I had a couple Chameleons as a kid but due to poor education(mainly incorrect information from the pet shop which is now closed) neither of them lived more than a few months. I plan to attend the Repticon show in Pasadena Texas in March to pick up a Cham for my son and I to raise. I feel like now I have the capacity to learn about them so we can provide proper husbandry. I have been gathering information from this site so we can build an enclosure and get all of the required accessories in and set up before the show. We(my wife and I) are also still trying to decide what species would be best for us so any opinions there would be welcome. We were thinking Veiled(as that's what I had before) or Parsons. I'm sure I'll be asking lots more questions so thanks in advance!

Hello Texas how are you? Welcome to the group. If you read a good bit you can learn a lot. Also don't be afraid to ask questions, we are good with answers. On what kind of cham to get? I have to agree a veiled or panther. Those would most likely do better with your climate. Also unless you have an extra $3000 don't get your hopes up for a Parsons. in all my years and shows from coast to coast, only once have I seen a parsons for sale at a show.

Welcome to the forums. I agree that a male veiled or male panther would make an excellent started chameleon. I keep both along with a parsonii and they are all a pleasure to care for. Hello Mike, congrats for joining the forum. I also live in Houston. I breed Nosy Faly panther chameleons. I will have some falys and a nosey be male avail at the Houston Area Reptile Keepers Assoc show in Febuary in Katy. The HARKA shows are every 3-4 months. Do your homework, learn about gutloading your feeders and caging & lighting. Get your equipment together prior to purchase as you stated earlier it makes the exp so much less stressful. If your getting a baby cham, start with a small screen cage of about 16" x16" x 20". You can buy those @ LLL supply or Diy Cages. I would wait and build the chams permanent adult cage as they outgrow their baby cages by about 6-8 months. Then they are ready for their adult home. You can take that premade screen cage and use it as a sunning cage outside so it isnt going to go to waste. And the nice wood cage can stay inside out of the elements.
