just figured i would finally stop lurking and learning and say hi. i have always loved reptiles and have always wanted a chameleon. well our kids are old enough and are wanting one so the journey is beginning :D

right now i am looking to get a veiled male but i dont know from where. i am liking what tiki tiki has on their site. i have a very good pet store about an hour and a half from me that i need to check out yet though. the hardest decision is if i should build a custom enclosure or buy a factory built. i am pretty handy so not worried about that. it looks like buying one would actually be cheaper but not as cool as a custom job. :D

anyways thanks for all the great posts and threads i have been able to read through and learn from. hopefully one day i will have the knowledge to contribute.

if you are only going to have one, or rather plan on having just one (you will come to find its an addiction) i would build a cage...i have built and bought and honestly the one i built is just sitting in my screened in porch...you can customize it to your needs if you build it, and get the enjoyment of the build...but its really whatever you want, the lllreptile screen cages and the DIYcages are super easy to setup and work very well...good luck with the cham search, tiki tiki is a site sponsor and has really good chams, i would choose one from them over any petstore, but check out the classifieds and the site sponsors...they dont always have their sites updated so call or email about availability...anyways welcome to the forums and again good luck in your search

thanks for the welcomes.

justin, yeah you are correct i would not buy one from just any pet store. the store i am talking about is not your normal pet store though. very knowledgeable and they breed a lot of their own animals and use local breeders also. they had to relocate to a bigger place a few years back, but in their old shop they actually had a male veiled free ranging above your head when you walked through. i dont know if they breed their own chams though, and i would like to kinda know what the sire and dam are out of :D

Hello! I am beginning my journey into Chameleon ownership too. I'm only at the researching stage at the moment but this forum is fantastic and there is SO much information here waiting to be discovered. Everyone seems very knowledgeable and friendly too :)

A belated hi and welcome, Dave! I would trust the store whereof you speak when it comes to chameleons (in Old Town, Lansing, formerly in Haslett, unless I seriously miss my guess?); getting a cham from Tiki Tiki would work fine as well. Cedar Creek Veterinary in Williamston (a bit of a drive for you, but no worse than Lansing) has two very good reptile vets (should you ever need them), and I went to them for years.
I miss that pet store; Lincoln, NE has nothing remotely comparable.

Hello, welcome. Always happy to have new people join out group. When you have your set up ready we will all offer hopefully helpful comments. Just ask questions away, the more you learn now the better for you and your cham. Hopefully we will get you past a the wrong stuff they always tell new people they need. Hope to hear more from you. Tell the kids hi.:)

Welcome to the best cham info site! Glad to see more Michigan people on here, too! It is totally addicting. I think building your own cage is the way to go, that way you can customize the look, and there are tons of ideas on cages here. I love the cage I built myself, and honestly it wasn't that more expensive then buying a nice cage. Good luck!
