help my cham like hornworms

I bought a Hornworm last night and presented it in a dish to my chameleon but, he was not having it. He made his head tick and turned dark and sort of ran from it. Does anyone have any suggestions or do some chameleons just do not take to certain foods?

It could be the dish freaking him out, or a giant arm holding a dish with a bright green alien thats freaking him out.

Trying holding the horn worm and letting it wriggle around in your fingers, or just place it on something he's familiar with like his branches, or something similar.

Hope that helps :)

HWs placed on the screen is a good idea... That will get teh cham's attention... Or on a stick/vine in the cage near by.

How big is the HW?

Trust me, once your cham decides "hmmm, I'll give it a try" He'll never hesitate again, unless he is full.........

If the HW is large, almost too big for the cham, be SURE to smash the head of the worm so it's pinches can't bite the cham. HWs don't go without a fight. I have had my melleri get HWs stuck to their lips... HWs swinging around vilently... and People reportting of HWs biting once inside the mouth.

Now... This doesn't mean they aren't good feeders... Just means you need to feed the right size and take the right precautions. I don't feed HWs without watching the cham completely finish the worm. I don't leave a work out and walk away.

Thank you, I tried the stick idea, it seemed to go over better with him but he still did not take it. The HW is more or less an inch long and about a quarter of inch wide so, I will deff try the smashing of the jaws thing. I put the HW in the dish with the crickets in his cage, he ate all the crickets and left. I will keep trying but, it may be a lost cause.

lol. Sorry i know it's not funny but it reminds me of my melleri. I had given him a hw without taking careof the biting and of course as soon as i put in on the vines he went insane trying to get to it as fast as possible. Well, anyway, he zapped it and it must have bit him cause i never saw him drop it so fast. I continually tried to get him to take it trying every which way. But he would have nothing to do with it. So eventually i gave up and just fed them to my other chams. After about a month and a half i decided to try it again, this time making sure it wouldn't bite back. It took him awhile but he eventually did eat it. He just got scared and it took awhile for him to get the nerve to try it again. Well that's my cham phsycology. Actually it might have been more llike 2 mos before he would try it. Try a smaller one because they are awesome feeders after a few days and see if that works.

ya know...i fed my cham a super...and he was eating it like normal...i looked down to spot clean as he was eating...and all i saw was a chewed up super fall to the bottom of the cage....ever since hes been hesidant ....maby it bit em lol. he still eats em ...but hes not so quick to get it. funny you said that chamlover.
