My chameleon is having some eye troubles and I'm not sure what to do. Yesterday he couldn't open his eye and today he could open it but it doesn't look quite right. If anyone has any insights it would be greatly appreciated. in the picture, its kind of hard to see but there seems to be a slight lump diagonal from his pupil and in line with his nostril and the area just below his eye seems to be slightly swollen. His eye wont close all the way since hes actually sleeping in the picture and his other eye is completely closed. Additionally the eye lid seems to be slightly misshappen.

I would take him to the closest qualified vet. I can't see much from the picture but your description sounds like a foreign object could be lodged in his eyelid or possibly the beginning of an infection. How is his grip and appetite?

Could you please fill out this info for your cham?

Chameleon Info:

  • Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
  • Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
  • Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
  • Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
  • Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
  • Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
  • History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
  • Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
  • Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
  • Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
  • Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
  • Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
  • Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

Pictures are helpful

Thanks Matt, I read through the thread you started about the basics of eye health and it was very helpful, Ive made an appointment with an exotic pet Vet and for now I'm increasing mistings to try and help him clean out his eye. Seeing as how his behavior and appetite are unaffected my hope is that it is nothing serious. I showered him for about 20 minutes this morning and since then he has been bulging his eye and opening it much more frequently so hopefully he's getting better.

Andy, his grip is normal and so is his appetite, my hope is that it is just a foreign object and he will clear it himself relatively easily.
