HELP! Prolapse rectum?

Woke up this morning to my adult male Chameleon, his tail still curled in sleeping position with feces hanging out and what looked to be some kind of fleshy stuff hanging out :( I googled and saw pictures of rectal prolapse and it looked just like what he was doing. I didn't get a picture because by the time I got done googling and went back in there it had gone back in. I have never seen him do this before, his diet is varied with gut loaded crickets, roaches and worms, he gets his calcium and vitamins. Well hydrated, cage is cleaned regularly as well as plenty of uvb and basking temps. Ugh. I just don't know what I can do? My vets in my area do not handle reptiles of any kind so I am SOL.

If it went back in, most likely he was pooping and what you saw was his hemipene.

Its normal for them to come out when they poop, and as long as they go back in its totally fine.

Im trying to remember where i read about this... if i find it ill send you a link, but with males they say that is something normal that happens sometimes, its the reproductive organs, after bowel movements that end up outside for a short time, but go back in by themselves... i don't think you have anything to worry about... ill look for the article where i saw that.

Like camimom said, it was most likely his hemipenes that you saw and that is normal as long as they retract back inside the vent.

No need to apologize! Never hesitate to ask questions on here. It. Old be the difference in life or death of your chameleon
