Hey guys, I want to start a dubia roach colony. I have a few questions..

1. My guy is only a little over 3 months old..when do I start feeding him Dubia Roaches? (I dont even know how big Dubias get or how they start out)

2. What do I need to sustain a colony? Where do I get a starter colony? i was told I could get a colony for 50 bucks...

Depends how fast you want the colony to produce and be sustainable. You will need at least a 100 to start w/ at least 50 adults. You will want more males than females at least 4 to 1 ratio. I hear it takes about a month to really get them producing nymphs. I think you will need a rubber made tote and a heat source if you wan em to make babies. I have heard 90-95 degres are the optium temps. just gut load em and leave em alone. they love the dark and they don't smell as bad as crix.

Yes and since you only have 1 chameleon you shouldnt have to much of a problem with getting the colony going and sustained. You can feed them right now dubia range from the size of a rollie pollie to up to almost 2 inches. Just get a bin and a heat pad and some screen and replace the top with screen thats what I did.

Ok picasso i just bought my colony for 39 bux from dragonbreeders. You need to jump on that deal. It inc. free shipping. So for 39.00 I got 100 adult b. dubia roaches. I just found a large plastic tote for $4.00 at walmart. Now all i need is a heat pad. That is going to save me som $$ on crix in the future. Come on buy some roaches you know you want too. lol

Actually you will want more females than males my colony that recently exploded with babies has 97 females and 15 males. Too many males will make the females drop the egg sack, they're very shy.

concerning the heat pad-- you just throw one right in the bottom of the tupperware bin you have the colony in?

How long does it take for them to reach adult hood from nymphs?
I have 10 chams to feed and want to know if I should go for dubias or lobster roaches.

I would rather have the dubias but apparently they take 6 months to reach adult hood (says SAroachman who also exports from SA to the states and maybe canada?).
He reccomended me to get lobster roaches because they take only 10 weeks to reach adulthood, as I am looking for something that breeds fast, reaches adulthood fast and breeds in large numbers because I will need enough feeders to be fed to atleast 20 chameleons by october. And I need to stop buying crickets because I am getting more chams and the crickets are becoming expensive.

What do you guys think?

Good call Texas. I'm going to get a colony of 100 now, and it will also help feed/sustain my juvenile Red Tegu .. he is a great eater too and he might be hungry coming out of hibernation .. I drew him from Hibernation today :)

Wow i didn't know tegu hibernated or went into winter diapause or whatever they call it. Is yours tame? I had a friend that had a large monitor. His was not so nice. lol

my tegu is amazing. I only got him in September, and he already comes up to me when I put my hand in. He knows me already. He also arches his back up when I pet him - like a cat lol

OK just ordered the 100 assorted medium dubia's for 39.99 from dragonbreeder... good call and thanks again !

I will need more help with it when the time comes closer...

Yeah mine should be here today or tomorrow. I will tell ya how it goes. I'm going to get my box ready for them today. I just can't decide if i'm going to hot glue the wire to the box or just use some good ol duct tape. If someone has tried either and had probs please tell me.

Yeah i cut the holes in my plastic tote last night i just couldn't decide if it wanted to mess with the hot glue or not. Duct tape would be so much faster and neater. I'm not good w glue! lol I'm just worried the duct tape might fall off after time.

I used the hot glue gun to hold the screen in the lid.
I would hate to have the duct tape come off and have the little suckers escape.

Yeah Im thinking that too. Im just worried that after cleaning the tote several times the duct tape will be compromised. Time to make a mess today. :D
