Horn worms to big?

Hey everyone!
So the Horn worms i ordered have gotten pretty darn big. I am a little worried to feed them to my cham in fear that he might not chew them enough and choke or something. Is this something I should worry about?
Thanks!

how big are the hornworms? If you had to guess, what would be a close measurement? How big is your cham?

id say the hornworms are about 4 inches or so, and my panther is about 5-6inches from tip of nose to vent.

Wow. That's pretty big. I don't know. I wouldn't risk it, then. Perhaps someone on here can offer better advice, or have been brave enough to feed hornworms the size of the SVL of their cham. lol

Your cham is a bit young for an adult Horn worm..... Let the worms cocoon... remove them from the cup with food (put cup in fridge with a solid lid to seal it) and place them in another cup that is clear, allow them to have light cycles (day and night time...) and when they hatch into moths put the moths into a bin... let them mate and lay eggs... Then take the cup with chow, with a vented lid, put some eggs into the cup and turn over (so chow is at the top) and wait till the eggs hatch. Keep this cup warm, above 80*. You'll have new HWs in a matter of weeks. :D

Awesome, thanks for the advice! Can I feed the moths to the cham?

I took a closer look at him, and I am thinking more like maybe 8icnhes from snout to vent. hes asleep now, but ill measure tomorrow and get a more exact number for ya

Even at 8", that cham is to small to eat a 4" long horn.... Thats like you eating a 60lb steak.... Save the horns for when you cham is older. The moths arent any smaller either, they have a 4-5" wing span.

How old is your panther?

This is Fred eating his first HW... he had no issues.... But I think he has the 'WTF?!' look on his face and he held it like this for a minute while he figured things out. :D

Just watch your cham. If he can't fit it down he'll spit it out. You want to just make sure the worm isn't trying to fight back. If your cham is like 9-12 months he should be able to handle a full sized HW.... Just keep an eye on him. My panther Steve, has sorta learned that HWs like to get a good grip. So when he eats one he'll get kinda close and ends up having to pull the worm off of the vine.

As for the Moth.... They are large as well, but might be doable. I don't know if a younger cham could handle a HW moth, I'd be concerned about the moth wings.... They are called Hawk Moths for a reason.... :D

Give it a shot...

This is Henry vs. a hawk moth...

Still working on it...

I still love this video. The 2nd half of him just chewing is excellent. He looks amazingly pleased with himself.

After sewing that kind of destruction, I would be too.

He is almost a year and a half old. He has eaten plenty of hornworms before, just not this big. The last large one I gave him he seemed to only chew once or twice and then swallowed it, and he seemed to gag a few times after. So it got my kind of worried.

Do chams have a natural reflux to spit out or regurgitate something up if its too big?

Has anyone ever had a cham choke on them before?

I haven't had any of mine barf except when I had a dehydrated cham. If he gets a couple of good chomps on the worm he'll be able to handle it. they are soft worms and sorta slide down..... I would think at his age he can handle them I have given them to my 11.5 month old Ambilobe Steve. He looked at his first one soooo wide eyed. He just looked at it for like a minute as if he was thinking "I GET TO EAT THIS?!??!?!" and then finally got into position and took a shot and ate it. I think I have it on vid too LOL....

Misread "Vent", Thought it said tail. My apologies. My 16" tip-tail female Vield is eatting 4"+ HW's no problem. Shes 9.5 months old.

Heres Osang:

I just fed him a big old fat HW, and he seemed to do fine, took him a while to get it down though! haha

Hey Dan, its past their bed time ;) Oh and feeding time. haha

HWs prolly aren't so bad to feed off later in the day.. since they are mostly just moisture. But it is a good idea to feed them in the morning or earlier in the day. They need the daytime heat to digest the food.

What time do you have your lights go on and off?
