horn worms

Hey everyone!
So I just ordered a cup of hornworms from mulberry farms. When I feed them to my chams should I dust them or anything? I also noticed people on the forum mentioning that they only give them as occasional treats. How often can I give them, because I will have a dozen or so, and what should I gut load them with?

Thanks!

mulberry leaves is what they eat as they get older, when they ship them to you they come with a decent amount of food, it will probably take a week or 2 for them to eat it all * mine at all of it, ran outta food and died before i could feed them off*.

I use them as treats only simply because they're somewhat expensive. i dont bother to dust them since they are a treat. I think you're fine to offer them every other day. I suppose if I was using them that often I would add calcium. If I order more than I am going to use right away (I usually just get 25 and feed all of them off immediately to my various pets), I get the supplier to include enough food to keep the extras alive for a week. careful - they grow quickly when fed.

I use them as a treat also (along with silkworms) so I dont bother about dusting them. The reason I treat them as a treat is that they are really high in water content and with my chams if they eat too many it really makes their poops watery and runny which I hate cleaning up.

I love horn and silk worms just to add variety to my chams diet. Gutloaded crix, roaches and superworms make up 80% of their diet and silk and horn worms make up the other 20% with the occasional waxworm as a special treat :)

I sure wish I had a local store where I could pick up a few of this and that. I can only get crix, supers and BIG roaches....which I don't buy....eck

Thanks Jann. I am searching for a store that I could go to and Jacksonville is a bit out of my neighborhood. Does anyone in So. Florida know of places other then Underground and Ben Siegals? They both have a very limited choice of feeders.

Sang, try cooling them next time. I have two cups right now that are two weeks old and the worms are only an 1.5" long with plenty of food. I have been keeping them about 74 during the day and 63-68 at night. I am actually keep one of the cups in an incubator right now to speed up the one cup so my Melleri can enjoy large HWs haha.

It is true that they will consume all of the food. The heat causes them to eat eat eat eat and poop poop poop poop... then no food left. If you have silk worm chow mix, use that. The chow in the cups is just silkworm chow.

When you order hornworms what size should I get, small, medium or large? I have a male and a female panthers, both a little over a year old. Also, does it matter what color you get, green or blue?

Thanks

Color doesn't matter- it is a dye added to the food I think.

I would get small if I were you- better to have them too small and then grow them for a bit than too big and never be able to feed them off. You will have more control over their growth that way and can keep them all cool but remove a few at a time to a different container to incubate and make grow.

We can ship to you, only takes a day with UPS ground! Call to request this service of shipping, its not on the website.

it'll also cost way more than it will be worth... unless you order a lot of worms.

Edit: aren't you on the east coast how is it one day? Maybe I read your post wrong but I thought you had said to request next day air? If you can ship to the west coast via UPS ground in one day, nice service you provide.

Edit2: can we say retard. I finally made the connection. Next time use a quote lol. you were responding to Boca Jan's comment about wanting a local breeder of HWs........ I thought you were referring to Dan. He lives in San Fran..;)

It isn't a dye per say. Its the absence of chlorophyll .

For your reading and eating pleasure.

Coastal Silk worms now has a West Coast location also. I've used the east coast one for years and they do a great job.
