So I've been into hornworms lately for the past 2-3 weeks, have hatched 50 eggs, and bought 24 3rd Instar hornworms. Now all the babies are big, and I'm feeding off as much as my chameleons would handle! I plan on keeping 7-8 alive to pupate. These are my small worms. Then there is my big worms...which with luck will survive to be moths soon!
UPDATE: The small ones grew pretty damn fast, one to big for my oldest chameleon that (I think) bit him so he spit it out with its head crushed and bleeding all over. While my female veiled I gave her a medium small one and she did the same thing as well, maybe they're too big? So far I have two in the dirt right now pupating.
Hornworms bite, when they get to a certain size they become more dangerous, so I only feed 1.5 inches or under. They can seriously injure your cham. But if your cham hits it right with their tongue usually there isn't a problem.
UPDATE: Sorry for being gone for almost a month but last week on Sunday my first moth hatched, and today I have 6 moths and 2 that are almost ready to come out of thier pupae. I have been very successful in getting eggs from them, it really wasn't that hard work. I just put a small tomato plant and they lay eggs everywhere. Right now I have a total of about 200 eggs, and well I suppose there's more on the way. I don't about anyone else but this is the most easiest breeding project I've ever done. On a side note, I successfully bred crickets and am currently taking care of baby ones, exciting .
