Ok so I bought 4 cups of hornworms and I let one cup grow out of control for sancho since he likes the big ones and well today I looked and 2 of them are red/brown and don't even look like a hornworm anymore. they look more like a dubia. Is this mean they are dead or what? Oh and the cup STINKS!

Ahh I see well I can't raise moths also so I guess once they harden I'll just stick them outside and let them be free.

I have never had a Hornworm moth refused by any species...maybe it's like desert to them!:D

Technically No. Your not suppose to release in the state of California. Know as a agriculture pest to the state. If you got your hornworms from Mulberry it would have warning lable not to release.

Nope I got them from Great Lakes. Glad to know that I will try to feed them off but if that doesn't work i'll just trash them.

Anyone have a picture of a cham eatting a hornworm moth? Do I need to gutload them also? or are they ready to go once they come out?

I tried feeding D.H. one and personally from what I saw I wouldnt recommend it:eek: It took him a bunch of tries to actually spear it and catch it because of the soft silky stuff and when he finally got it that thing put up a hell of a fight. Its legs where clinging all over his face and you could tell he was not happy so I took it from him. He definatly wanted it back but I havent tried feeding moths since then. Maybe try tearing the legs off first.

Hmm sounds like I'm just going to destroy them before they turn into moths.

It's happened to me before with superworms and mealworms etc...even waxworms. I would wait until the emerge and feed them off.

Well now I have 6 in this red state. still don't know what I'm going to do with them seems like 2 of them are fully hard by looking at them. I guess I'll just leave them in a cup in the window.

What I do, is rip their legs and wings off... then wet them. They have a fat belly... Only a few of my chams liked them.

You'd better kill them somehow. They can decimate a field of tomato plants. Put them in a brown bag and smash them....

Oh trust me I would kill them where I know they are not alive. I'm just trying to decide on to feed them to my chams or just get rid of them now.

I have let my hornworms pupate and hatch. I have fed moths off and I have fed the actual pupae off. They wiggle if you press on them. They are full of liquid and are fine for chams.

They smell though :p I'm going to let the 5 I have do their thing and try to feed them off if the chams don't like them then (rubber hammer) BAM! they are gone
