I know it is done a lot... But I myself have never purchased or sold an animal through the mail. Is there somewhere that shows you the best and safest way to ship a cham?

Also... I was just reading about it on the UPS website.. .and It says you can't ship roaches!! I know people sell roached online all the time. How do they ship their roaches?

Right from the website... I didn't even notice it said snakes till just now!

Only Fed-Ex and Delta Dash allow shipping of live animals. UPS doesn't allow any shipping of snakes and even chameleons. Chameleons would fall under endangered and threatened species. It's actually illegal to do so and if they catch you they can hold your animal. With Fed-Ex and Delta Dash you have to apply and pass their requirement to become a certified shipper of live animals with them. It's basically sending one of their boxes empty and seeing if you are able to follow their rigorous directions. I've gotten stuff from UPS and prefer getting it delivered to my door. Fed-Ex also does door-to-door shipping but most breeders that I've encountered aren't certified and if they are they have to ship to a Fed-Ex holding station of live animals. There's a lot of them in Los Angeles though. With Delta you have to pick it up at the nearest airport. I've had experiences with both and they seem ok. With Fed-Ex they once sent it to Marina Del Rey when I wanted (and the shipper) it to go to Westwood. As for Delta Dash, finding their cargo warehouse was like hell. I thought it would be near LAX but it wasn't and their address was misleading. As for whether or not, breeders follow these rules, from experience, they don't. Personally, I don't care because having my pets delivered right to my door seems best to me. The only downside to UPS is that if they catch you, who knows what the consequence is. I would just freak if they withheld my animal and it died because they stored it at an unknown warehouse. From experience with about 7 deliveries from UPS, they never checked. One time, the driver knew it was a snake cause the shipper put Python regius on the box and put holes on the side. He didn't do anything but did a shiver as he handed me the package. :D

Hmmmm, I just got my new cham via UPS... Interesting. They must not check or care. They may just have the policies to appease some group or appear eco-friendly or something but they just end up doing it anyways.

Each carrier has their own rules regarding animal shipments, but UPS does allow lizards to be shipped unless they're dangerous or endangered (chameleons aren't all endangered). With UPS, you have to fill out an application to ship live animals, with a brief history on each type you'll be shipping. They have a long list of animals they won't ship, but chameleons and most lizards fit through the cracks. I have shipped well over 1,000 chameleons with UPS, many times labelling right on the box that it was a "live harmless chameleon" and they've never refused it or said anything. I believe they'll allow turtles and tortoises also, which I think USPS won't allow (been a while since I've checked on that). Like I said, different carriers have different rules, but I think lizards are allowed with pretty much all of them.

Tyler, where do you get the application? At the UPS Store or can you get it online?

Good to know. Learn something new each day. :)

Would someone care to illustrate or describe the best way to actually pack a cham? Tyler maybe? How much space is too much space? I got my veiled in a deli cup, but what do you do for an adult? How do you insulate? How many heat packs? what do you use for cushioning? I've seen newspaper used, I think I've also seen cloth bags?

That would be very helpfull...:)

You can get the application when you set up a business account with them (over the phone) and they'll mail the paperwork to you. To ship a chameleon once or twice probably isn't allowed by UPS, but it's ok once you have the account set up with paperwork done.

I get all my shipping materials from SuperiorEnterprise.com. You can get foam lined boxes, heat/cool packs and everything else you need. I pack small chameleons in 16oz clear cups with vented lids (with a small piece of dry paper towel), and larger animals in the "snake bags" you can buy from Superior, sometimes with nothing in there for them to hold on to (they can grab onto the bag they're in). Keep them dry; they're not going to die of thirst in a day or two, but having a wet paper towel encourages them to go the bathroom in the cup, which can lead to URI if they're sniffing that for an extended period. I pack the box with shredded white paper (newspaper has a smell to it, although several people use newspaper with no apparent problems), and pack them relatively tight. I've done almost all my shipments the same way for years, so if you've ever bought a cham from me, that's usually how you recieved it.

I have only shipped roaches a few times, and I used USPS when I did. I don't know the rules they have in place about it, but I would be more concerned about the Federal laws against shipping roaches into certain states (Florida, Arizona etc). If USPS catches you messing around, they'll probably just return your box. If Fish & Wildlife catches you, you might end up with an ankle bracelet LOL...

Airport to airport

I thought the airlines provide counter to counter shipping of packages???

Drop them off at your airport.....BANG.....5 or 6 hours later they're across the country. The recipient then goes to their airport and picks it up!!!

Does this really exist or am I imagining things?

Yes please, Im rather curious, Im guessing a tall container of some description (arborial) with wedged branches to hang onto?

My insects came by USPS. Just said LIVE INSECTS on the side..no problems.

I actually worked in AirCargo at the DFW airport so needless to say one of their largest hubs and I can tell you from personal experince the VAST MAJORITY of their packages go through unchecked, they even told us in training the only way they have found such packages is, for example, a crocodile that was being shipped had urinated and they had to discontinue shipping the box as it was wet. Anything from animals, drugs, drug accesories (bongs and so forth) and anything else you can imagine can AND DO go through UPS on a regular basis, regardless of all the bells and whistles they try to mention. Furthermore, and also pretty funny while I was working there guys on my crew were stealing cell phones from cargo containers once we had them loaded on the airplanes, I thought it was the stupidest $&*^%$ thing you could do as you are risking two federal offenses for a cell phone... well just a few months ago I saw on the news that several UPS employees at DFW had been caught stealing you guessed it cell phones along with some other things, I had a good laugh to myself. So anyway, you can definitely ship em though that is not to say there isn't the rare chance it could be confiscated. One more thing, as I'm sure most of you know... FRAGILE does not mean a DAMN thing... unfortunately :(
