How long can chameleons be without enclosure lamps and humidifiers? (PowerOutage)

Hello 👋 I’m new here and have been planning to get a veiled chameleon sometime this year. I’m currently in the getting myself informed stage.

I haven’t seen this question but it could just be my poor navigation skills. But what do you guys do if your power goes out?
While looking at the items needed for an enclosure I noticed just how much these little guys will rely on the power staying on but the fact that hurricane season is a few months away popped into my head.

My area usually just stays 1-2 days without power but there’s been times where we’ve been two weeks or so without power. How do you guys keep your chameleons safe during that time?

Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of chameleons! When power is out the two things I would worry most about is temps getting too high and water if lights are off for too long. If your power is off for a day or two and temps are low I wouldn't worry a ton - its just a really long long long night for your chameleon.

Some emergency back up suggestions/things I do in case of an emergency:
- everyone is in the basement so if power goes out temps are naturally lower during the day and I don't need to worry about anyone overheating
- Have a spray/pump spray bottle on hand so if electricity is out, chameleons can still get water
- I store several gallons of RO water for my chameleons just in case
- Consider breeding 1 or 2 staple feeders so that if weather slows down the ability to order bugs you have some to fall back on
- Have a vet box set up for everyone, so if you have to leave your house they have their own containers to be in for emergencies
- Have 1 or 2 back up houses set up (friends or family) where you can take your chameleon in their vet box if power is out too long
- (Now this last one, keep in mind I am extreme so this may be excessive) I have one of those huge batteries you can recharge so I can run a UVB light if needed. I also have a single solar panel to recharge this battery when it runs low.

I live in the California Motherlode area of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Foothills. The area where I live there is a definate "Fire Season" where towns can be evacuated for days and etc.... When emergency time are happeneing here on big device my family uses to keep the greenhouse, Reptile and Aquarium Room Lab going is a gas powered generator. The generator that I have powers most all of my biological specimens life support for all the emergency time periods. I recommend looking into some type of generator to keep power on during hurricane emergency time.

Fair warning generators can be expensive to buy. Good Luck.

Best Regards

All are great advise!
