How long should uvb and heat lamp be on? heat is 50watts, uvb is 10.0 i it matters.. baby is a 6 week panther. thanks everyone

As already stated. I do 12 hours in the summer months and back off to about 8-9 hours in the winter.

I think the 10.0 might be a bit much. Most use 5.0

I just do 12 hours.

7am lights on, 7pm lights off.

Also cut the 10.0 down to a 5.0, 10.0's are for dessert reptiles.

If your chameleon is not showing any signs of stress or closing eyes during the day with your lights on.. Then don't worry about the 10.0.. It simply Is not a problem if your chameleon is not showing any stress from it. Many keepers on this forum have used 10.0 successfully. And yes I have also started my new light schedule. I have a 7 month old veiled. My lights are 7 am to 5 pm

As a basic rule, 5.0 has been the consensus, but there is obviously enough support for other options. Remember, its not always easy for new owners to know what stress looks like!

Yes 10:0 with dense screened cages and larger cages to make sure UVB gets threw the cage and to your Cham. But on a small cage with young Cham the better option is a 5.0.

haha ok, let him use a 10.0 for a 6 WEEK old panther

Make it easier for yourself and get a 5.0 w/ NO worries, once he's bigger you can then upgrade your 5.0 to the 10.0. Just double your mesh at the top of your enclosure to reduce the uvb.

The 10.0 will be just fine. If you have never tried this and your going off of what you have read on the mighty internets. You are arguing or even voicing an opinion over something you have no clue about really.

lol i'm not ARGUING.

Just stating get a 5.0 so you won't have to stress over it.

If you look at the box the 5.0 comes in, it specifically says that dense fabric mesh cages cut UVB transmission by at least 50% so a higher wattage bulb might be in order....

Just sayin'

On the original question: about the only really good advice I got from the store that sold me my first chameleon was "think of the light as the sun"....do that. When the sun is up, the light is on, when the sun is down, the light is off. Of course, you have to figure a time in the "twilight" time to declare "off or on" but the basic idea holds. Or...get a dimmer!! And a timer!!! And have the light go slowly on and off just like the real sun. That would be a really awesome chameleon owner thing to do.

but really...just match the lights to "daylight" and you should be fine.

Thank you for the help everyone.. well I am a new owner but i've heard of the stress signs like them having their eyes closed in the day and not eating. I heard something about it being a bad sign if they just hide in the leaves alot?? but either way... and i can be wrong.. he seems to be pretty happy. he eats about 5-7 dubia roaches a day.. no closed eyes.. i dont know if the hiding in the leaves is a problem.. but he only does it once its bed time..

Aw, the almighty internets strikes again! haha

10.0's don't sound too bad...Been reading up on them and i think they could be beneficial for chams. But for a 6 week old chameleon it would stress me out, personally. But It shouldn't effect your cham at all with your 10.0 UVB.

The 10.0 bulb outputs about as much UVB through the screen as the sun does at about 9am. Hardly what I would consider a riddiculous amount of UV. The 5.0 is more meager still. So I do not think that a baby will suffer from that bulb, especially when breeders bring babies outside for sunshine in the early morning and late afternoon.

But yes, have the lights set to mimic the sun, with seasonal changes and everything. So lights will be on longer in the summer than in the winter. It will be the most natural schedule for them.
