I have heard it is about 3 times a year. Really the info im looking for is how often they lay when they are regularly mated, and how long you should wait between laying/ matings. thanks!
This is not something that is easy to answer. There are too many "ifs".
If the female is mated too late in her cycle she could produce a clutch within a week or two from the mating date. If produced this quickly it will likely be mostly infertile. The following clutch can be laid sooner than the normal 30 days will likely be mostly or completely fertile. A third clutch can follow about 30 days after that.
If the mating occurs earlier in her first cycle the clutch should be laid at about 30 days from the mating and will likely be mostly or totally fertile.
This can still be followed by another clutch about 30 days later which could be partly fertile.
If the female is not bred again after the first time she will run out of sperm and then the length of time between clutches of infertile eggs will likely be longer.
So...as you can see there is no definite answer and many "scenarios".
so if bred on a consistant basis, how often do the female lay eggs, every 30 days!?! seems like alot.
im looking to start breeding, but i do want to give the females a chance to regain strength and calcium levels again. what is a good mating schedule?
I would not do it more than once a year.
That is a personal choice .... and actually, I probably wouldn't do it that often.
I am much more interested in keeping a female alive longer.
Besides, what are you going to do with all those babies?
