ok im having difficult feeding diezel ihs meds with the syringe. at first great. now he wont open his mouth i cant even gently pry them open and he runs away any idea guys?
Doing it in the enclosure rarely seems to work out. We have one cham that allowed it, but only one. For one thing it is invading his territory. For another thing it is taking control of him, and making him do something he doesn't want to do, while he is in his own territory.
Here is a recommended method for doing difficult chams. It worked for us. Take him out and wrap him in a dark towel, leaving the front of his mouth exposed. This keeps him from moving, and actually helps him relax, especially if his eyes are covered.
Then, force open his mouth using a small rubber spactula. This is easiest with 2 people, but I have done it myself. Leave the spatula wedged in the mouth, and carefully inject the med into a space, somewhere in the mouth opening, created by the spatula.
If his mouth is too tightly shut for the spatula to open it, then you can use a large paper clip as a speculum. Place the paper clip between his lips and sort of wiggle it between his teeth. Once you get the paper clip to slide into his mouth you turn the paperclip gently to open the cham's jaws. This creates space for the syringe. Paperclips are so short, however, that one person has to hold the clip while the other injects the meds. With the spatula it is possible to use your body to kind of hold the spatula handle in place.
Once you have mastered this, you will be able to perform magic acts and exotic circus feats. Most people don't know that this is how Siegfried & Roy got their start .
