Hi brad,

i just read yor blog on raising kitty the chmeleon.

i have a very quick question regarding basking temps - you said n your blog that baby chams under 3 months shoulod have a baking heat of 80.

i have a 6 week old cham & i use a white basking light on a thermostat, as it is set to 80 the light iisnt as bright as whwn at full power - is this ok for him?
he sits quites happlie under it, but home times craws up the sensor to get a little higher, his branches are about 2" under the top of the viv & the light is in a mesh casing.

sorry i cant add pic as my pc is so old its hate it when i try to attach things to it.

hope you can help

many thanks danni & Monty

80 degrees f. (26 to 27 c.) should be quite warm enough for a baby veiled.
They may try to get a little warmer, hanging upside down on the screen under the light, which (in my opinion) is another reason to keep the temp lower.

I am assuming that your light is on some kind of thermostat that controls a dimmer?
The brightness of the light shouldn't matter.
What is of concern, however, is the position of your light. Am I understanding correctly? It is inside the enclosure with a mesh guard?
I would feel safer if that fixture were positioned on the outside of the enclosure.
You should also check the temps at the upper branches without the basking light, you may not even need it at this point.

my panther, that i've had a for a month now, about 5 months old total,
no matter what temp it was at would try to get even closer, but seems he grew out of it.

I agree. I dont have any of my baby panthers under basking lights up untill 3 months. The room I have them in stays around 75 and with the heat from the uvb and the regular florecent bulbs bumps the top of the cages up to around 80 give or take a few degrees depending on weather. I will find them on top of the cages trying to soak up a little more heat but so far this has done well in raising babies up for me.

No, not inside, the light is on the top of the viv (outside & above) so it also sits up quite high & yes, its on a dimer thermostate.

many thanks for your reply - i just wanted to double check that i was doing every thing right - & it seems i am!

thank you danni x
