Idk what to do about my chomeleon and its heater and light

Ok so the m new to chameleons and this is my first one. I have a veiled chameleon and idk what to do about the light and I’m afraid of it getting heat burn. So basically I know they’re supposed to be 6inches away from the heater lights but mine just crawls all the way up on the walls (they’re not glass btw) and will hung right under them. So what I did was put vines for it to sit under the land. I have two lights and one is 40w and the other is 60w. If the chameleon was 6in away from the light the temp would be around 70, but where it is and likes to stay right now it can reach up to 78 (also no I don’t have a humidifier or digger yet so all I can do right now is mist three times a day if even). So is there anything I can do to keep him away from being so close to the light?

Welcome. How old is your baby and how long has it been in your care? I only ask because babies and chams who are getting used to their new home often show screen climbing behavior, but it lessens over time. You can always raise the heat lamp off the top of the cage a bit, as long as you can maintain the proper basking temp for your little one.

I got it a few days ago and I’m assuming it’s anywhere from 2-3 months. I say that because I got it as a gift and they got it from a pet store. From where he normally sits the temp can be from 75-78 degrees and at night it’s around 70 but I’m trying to get it to 68. Sorry if the post seems like a freak out btw I just don’t want the little guy to get burned or something. Also I don’t know the humidity of the enclosure because I don’t have anything to measure it.

Welcome to the forum and the world of chameleons!

Please post some photos of your cage and the way the lights are set up now. Post some photos of your chameleon too please!

Here are some pictures of the chameleon itself, I don’t have any pictures of the cage right now. I’d take them now but it is currently night time and I read that it’s important for them to have no light for their sleep so sadly I can’t take a photo of it right now. If it helps I use a reprinted chameleon kit that comes with a medium sized cage.

Well, I have no experience with veiled chameleons, so I can't speak to how old your baby is. Hello sweet baby cham! But, what I will say, is you're going to want a much bigger cage ASAP. Minimum is 24"x24"x48". This is the size of a ReptiBreeze XL cage or a standard Dragon Strand cage. Too big is NOT a thing for chams when it comes to their habitat. Also, if I remember right, the UVB lamp that comes with this kit is not suitable for chams. I'm adding the link to UVB Basics from the Chameleon Academy for more info.
